EDINBORO EDGES CLARION 21-10
(CLARION, PA): Edinboro overcame a 3-0 halftime deficit and rallied in the second half to defeat Clarion 21-10 Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
The Clarion Homecoming Day crowd of 5,500 saw Edinboro’s Andre Burke carry 40 times for 173 yard and three td’s, including a big second half that had him tote the pigskin 29-times for 129 yard and 3 td’s.
EDinboro raised its overall record to 3-2 and 1-1 in the PSAC-West, while Clarion dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC-West.
Clarion took a 3-0 lead at 8:38 of the first quarter when Kyle Snoke booted a 29-yard field goal. Clarion linebacker Zach Gourley intercepted a Justin Bouch pass at the Edinboro 27 and returned it 7 yards to the Scot 20. Clarion had first and goal at the 10, but the drive stalled and Snoke came on to kick the field goal.
Early in the second quarter Clarion missed a golden opportunity to stretch its lead. Clarion linebacker Matt Morris intercepted another Bouch pass at the Clarion 39 and returned it 40 yards to the Edinboro 21. Clarion had third and goal at the 1, but Marcus Lowe was stopped inched short of the goal line. On fourth down the Eagles tried a qb sneak, but qb Brandon Dando fumbled the snap and recovered inches short of the goal line, but Edinboro had stopped Clarion.
All told, the Golden Eagles had 5 possessions deep in Edinboro territory in the first half and scored only three points.
Edinboro took the lead for good late in the third quarter when the Scots engineered a 44-yard scoring drive following a 16-yard punt. Burke scored on a 1-yard run and Kody Robertson’s kick gave Edinboro a 7-3 lead with 26-seconds left in the third.
Edinboro had good field position at the Clarion 46 after Lincoln Buffalino returned a Clarion punt 14 yards. Burke capped the drive with a 21-yard td run around right end and the Scots led 14-3 with 2:02 remaining.
Clarion bounced right back with an impressive 65 yard drive in only three plays. Brandon Dando fired a 48-yard td pass to Pierre Odom in the right side of the endzone for the Golden Eagle score. Snoke’s PAT cut Edinboro’s lead to 14-10 with 11:02 remaining.
Edinboro clinched the game with a 69-yard, 11-play drive as Burke went in from 1-yard out. Edinboro led 21-10 with 2:13 remaining. Burke accounted for 61 yards on the drive, including 8 rushes for 33 yards and 1 catch for 28 yards.
Clarion totaled 169 offensive yards including only 40 rushing and 129 passing. Marcus Lowe had 10 carries for 42 yards. Dando completed 9 of 23 passes for 129 yards and 1 td, while Pierre Odom grabbed 4 passes for 83 yards and 1 td.
Clarion’s defense was led by Bo Busch who had 18 tackles and 1 fumble recovery. Matt Morris had 14 stops, 1 int and 2 tfl’s.
Edinboro had 340 yards of offense including 197 rushing yards and 143 passing. Burke’s 40 carries were second on the all-time Edinboro attempt list. Bouch completed 12 of 21 passes for 143 yards with 2 interceptions. Justin Lipscomb caught 4 passes for 29 yards.
Clarion travels to East Stroudsburg next Saturday, while Edinboro returns home to host California.
