Clarion Defeats Glenville 23-20

(GLENVILLE, WV): Clarion’s James Charles posted a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown with 2:49 left in the fourth quarter to give Clarion the lead for good, and then Jabari Weatherspoon followed with a 38-yard interception return for a td with 1:22 remaining to give the visiting Golden Eagles a 23-20 win over Glenville State on Saturday afternoon.

Clarion raised its record to 1-2 overall while Glenville dropped to 0-3 in front of 1,500 fans at Morris Stadium.

Clarion trailed 13-9 late in the fourth quarter when Glenville qb Joey Conrad attempted an 10-yard out pattern and Charles stepped in front and streaked down the left sideline untouched to give Clarion a 16-13 lead with 2:49 left in the game.

On Glenville’s next possession, the Pioneers faced fourth and three at the Glenville 42 when Clarion noseguard Troy Bowers rushed up the middle and pressured Conrad to throw a pass up for grabs while being tackled in the backfield and Weatherspoon intercepted the pass and returned it 38-yards for a Clarion td with 1:22 left in the game. Mark Hofmeister’s PAT gave the Golden Eagles a 23-13 lead.

Conrad drove the Pioneers 55-yards in 8 plays and scored on an 8-yard pass from Conrad to Antonio Carter to make the final 23-20.

Clarion recovered the onside kick and was able to run out the clock.

Clarion finished the game with 220 yards of total offense including 106 rushing yards and 114 passing yards. Clarion qb Felton Woulard completed 8 of 14 passes for 88 yards and also rushed for 4 yards and 1 td.

Glenville won the statistic battle by gaining 417 yards of total offense including 55 rushing yards and 362 passing yards. Conrad completed 29 of 53 passes for 362 yards and 2 td’s. He also rushed for 8 yards and 1 td. His 5-yard td run with 11:11 left in the third gave the Pioneers a 13-3 lead.

Wide receiver Antonio Carter also caught 12 aerials for 172 yards and 2 td’s.

Glenville travels to New Haven next week, while Clarion returns home to host Kutztown at Memorial Stadium at 6pm
