California Edges Clarion 13-6

(CALIFORNIA, PA): Cal tailback Wes Clemons scored on a 2-year run with 11:09 left in the fourth quarter giving California a 13-7 come from behind victory over Clarion on Saturday night at Adamson Stadium.

Cal raised its overall record to 4-5 and 2-2 in the PSAC-West, while Clarion dipped to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the PSAC-West.

Clarion took a 7-6 lead with 5:28 left in the third quarter when Brandon Sweeney raced 58 yards to paydirt virtually untouched. The PAT was good by Mark Hofmeister and the Golden Eagles enjoyed their first lead of the game.

Cal’s Jon Arnold returned a Clarion punt 33 yards to the Golden Eagle 12 yard line to set up the game-winning touchdown. Clarion was called for pass interference in the endzone two plays later, and Cal had a first down at the Clarion 2. On first down Clemons sprinted off right tackle for the touchdown. Gary Amos booted the PAT and Cal led 13-6 with 11:09 remaining.

Clarion threatened late in the fourth quarter driving to the Cal 36, but the Eagles were held on downs with 1:40 to go in the game and the Vulcans were able to run out the clock for the win.

Clarion outgained Cal 316-160 in total offense and outrushed Cal 250-60, but three lost fumbles and one interception proved costly for the Eagles.

Clarion freshman qb Brandon Dando made his first start and rushed for 80 yards on 20 carries, plus completed 9 of 22 passes for 66 yards. Sweeney gained 64 yards and 1 td on 10 carries and Marcus Lowe gained 64 yards on 10 tries.

Cal saw Wes Clemons rush for only 47 yards and 1 td on 23 carries. He came into the game averaging over 100 yards per game. QB John Aitken completed 10 of 24 passes for 100 yards.

Cal placekicker Gary Amos booted two of three field goals including a 38-yarder in the second quarter and a 48-yarder early in the third quarter to give Cal a 6-0 lead. Both field goals came after Clairon fumbles deep in Clarion territory.

Clarion’s defense was led by Dale McCall with 8 tackles, 3 tfl’s and 2 sacks, while Troy Bowers had 5 stops, 2 tfl’s and 1 sack.

Clarion returns home to host Lock Haven next Saturday at 1pm, while Cal visits Edinboro.
