CLARION WOMEN TAKE SIXTH AT PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS; MEN FINISH 12th

The Clarion University women’s cross country team finished sixth at the 2003 PSAC Cross Country Championships Saturday at Bloomsburg, while the Golden Eagles men’s team was 12th.

TWO GOLDEN EAGLE WOMEN EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS

The women’s team’s sixth place finish was facilitated by two runners who earned All-Conference honors with top 15 finishes.

Melissa Terwilliger (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) earned her second all-conference honor with a career-best third-place finish (22:55), while Anna Beck (Washington/Washington) earned her first all-conference finish with a 13th place showing (23:54).

Terwilliger finished 1:20 behind the winner Mindy Sawtelle of IUP (21:35) and 30 seconds behind second-place finisher Vanessa Andes of East Stroudsburg (22:25).

As a team, Clarion scored 146 points, while Edinboro finished first with 57 points.

Addition Golden Eagle scorers included Jen Boerner (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) in 29th place (24:35), Sarah Rodgers (Chicora/Karns City) in 48th (25:11) and Evelyn Abiola (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) in 54th place (25:21 – scored in 53rd). Also racing for Clarion were Katie Jarzab (Oil City/Oil City; 74th place – 26:03) and Bridget Sardo (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown; 75th place – 26:08).

DURIANCIK, MAYERNIK PACE MEN’S TEAM

The Golden Eagles men’s team finished in 12th place with 298 points. Lock Haven won the team title with 39 points.

David Duriancik (Vandergrift/Kiski Area) was Clarion’s top runner finishing in 46th place while scoring in 45th place in a time of 28:13.9. A.J. Mayernik (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) was the second Golden Eagles across the finish line taking 50th while scoring in 49th place in a time of 28:19.

Addition scorer for the Golden Eagles included Ben Weaver (Marble/North Clarion) in 65th place (28:40 – scored in 61st), Paul Mastarone (Mercer/Grove City) in 74th place (29:00.5 – scored in 68th) and Matt Andreassi (Butler/Butler) in 81st place (29:16 – scored in 75th).

Also racing for Clarion were Sean Williams (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown) in 90th place (29:44) and Jason South (Lewis Run/Bradford) in 91st (29:45).

NOTES: Both Golden Eagle teams will be back in action next Saturday at the NCAA Regionals at Lock Haven.
