CLARION’S WOMEN CROSS COUNTRY TEAM FINISHES SECOND AT REGIONALS QUALIFIES FOR NCAA D-II NATIONAL MEET

ELKINS, W.VA. – Clarion’s women’s cross country team finished second at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Saturday at Elkins, West Virginia.

The Golden Eagles scored 62 points, 24 points behind champion IUP (38). With the second-place finish, Clarion qualifies for the NCAA Division II meet as a team for the first time under ninth-year head coach Pat Mooney. The NCAA meet will be held Nov. 23 at Ashland University.

"We ran a great race," Mooney said. "I am very proud of our runners. They have been working toward this goal all season."

Clarion, which finished third at the PSAC’s last weekend, had three runners earn All-Region honors and place all five scoring runners in the top 20.

The All-Region award winners were Melissa Terwilliger (8th place – 24:24), Anna Beck (9th place – 24:29) and Evelyn Abiola (11th place – 24:35). Bridget Sardo just missed All-Region honors finishing 16th in 24:52, and Katie Jarzab was 19th in 24:58. While Sardo finished 16th she scored as the 15th-place runner in the team scoring.

Two other Golden Eagle runners had good showings including Jen Boerner (23rd place – 25:13) and Katie Szafran (35th place – 25:43).

"Our depth was a real key to us placing second," Mooney said.

NOTES: Edinboro finished third with 65 points …IUP, Clarion and Edinboro will represent both the Atlantic Region and the PSAC at the national meet.
