FOUR CLARION PLAYERS NAMED ALL-REGION Four Clarion University baseball players have been named to the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association North Atlantic Region Team. Outfielders Jared Frey (Sr., New Bloomfield/West Perry) and Kevin Gledhill (Sr., Austin/Austin), catcher Jason Warner (Jr., Nescopeck/Berwick) and relief pitcher Chuck Roller (So., Warrington/Central Bucks East) were all second-team selections. The foursome helped lead Clarion to its best finish in two decades with a 25-22-1 overall mark and a 12-8 record in the PSAC-West. The Golden Eagles were co-champions of the PSAC-West with Shippensburg, California and Slippery Rock and earned the No. 1 seed from the West in the PSAC Playoffs. It was Clarion’s first trip to the PSAC Playoffs since 1984 and the Golden Eagles first PSAC-West title since ’84. “All four of them were instrumental in our season,” Clarion head coach Scott Feldman said. “Jared was outstanding as a pitcher, outfielder and even first baseman for us, while Kevin was a staple in right field. He had a lot of key hits for us this season. Jason was great both offensively and defensively, while we couldn’t have achieved what we did with Chuck closing out games for us.” Warner, a junior, led Clarion with a .397 average (4th best in the PSAC), 15 doubles and 40 RBI’s while adding five home runs and a triple. He stole 12 bases in 16 attempts while throwing out 42 percent of the runners trying to steal on him (22 of 53). Warner was named first-team PSAC-West catcher. In three years, Warner has hit .363 with 26 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 81 RBI’s while stealing 21 bases in 34 attempts. Frey, a senior, was second on the team with a .386 average. He added nine doubles, four home run and 25 RBI’s, while also being Clarion’s top pitcher with a 6-1 record with a save and 2.44 ERA. Frey’s season earned him PSAC-West “Athlete of the Year” honors as well as first-team PSAC-West outfielder and pitcher. In his career, he hit .342 with 34 doubles, seven triples, five home runs and 82 RBI’s while going 7-1 on the mound with two saves and a 3.60 ERA. Gledhill, a senior, hit .380 with a team-high six home runs and nine triples, which led the PSAC. He added 13 doubles and 38 RBI’s while stealing eight bases in 12 tries. Gledhill’s success earned him first-team PSAC-West honors. In his career, he hit .343 with 38 doubles, 15 triples, 17 home runs and 115 RBI’s in 143 games while stealing 21 bases in 30 tries. Roller, a sophomore, was the anchor of the bullpen appearing in 22 games and going 2-1 while setting a Clarion record with nine saves, which led the PSAC. Roller was chosen second-team PSAC-West. He had a 2.00 ERA (tied for 2nd in the PSAC) and struck out 21 batters while walking only seven in 27 innings of work. Roller is -5 lifetime with 13 saves and a 6.78 ERA. GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES – Five Golden Eagles were also named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America Division II North Atlantic Regional All-Star Team… Gledhill was a first-team outfield selection, Frey a second-team outfield selection, Roller a second-team relief pitcher choice, Warner an Honorable Mention pick at catcher and freshman Corey Rodgers (West Mifflin/West Mifflin) an Honorable Mention selection at utility player after being Clarion’s designated hitter this season. Rodgers hit .366 with eight doubles, four home runs and 28 RBI’s. |
