Speaker touts importance of exposure to new ideas

November 1, 2017

Clarion University International Programs and Minority Student Services will host speaker Latisha “L” Springer at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 in Hart Chapel. Her speech, “Global Lens: Beyond Borders and Other Barriers,” will focus on thinking beyond boundaries and differences to enable the audience to consider different perspectives.

Springer faced various obstacles in her life, all of which contributed to her eventually following her dreams and living abroad. She had grown up in an abusive home, becoming a single mother in her early 20s and working two jobs to put herself through college. While nurturing her relationship with her daughter, Springer also focused on her love of travel, settling in Santiago, Chile, after receiving her MBA from the University of Georgia.

"This began my obsession with designing a life on my terms," Springer said. She found where her passions lie and began to pursue them. She hopes to assist students at Clarion to follow their own dreams.

According to Rogers Laugand, director of Minority Student Services, events such as this are extremely important on college campuses.

"We live in a very diverse, global world," Laugand said. "It's so important to learn about different people. It makes it easier to communicate, work together and live together."

"Events like this at universities are important because students need to be exposed to ideas that challenge convention and inspire them to stretch beyond what they thought possible," Springer said. "The earlier, the better."

The event is free and open to the public.
