Clarion offers first PDE-approved leadership program for teachers

November 17, 2017

Clarion University has developed a Skills for Teacher Leaders Endorsement Program, the first such program to be approved by Pennsylvania Department of Education. This endorsement program, offered online, builds on the expertise teachers already have, adding the knowledge and skills that embody effective leadership, specifically for teachers.

More than ever, teachers are accepting a variety of leadership positions in their schools. Schools are very complex, and teachers are needed to fill positions such as department chair, grade level/curriculum coordinator, instructional coach, and site leaders at both instructional and organizational levels. Teachers enrolled in the program will learn to lead in situations of uncertainty; support and negotiate politics of change; serve as effective peer mentors; respond to competing school reform initiatives to promote student success; and develop effective learning and professional communities through collaboration within the school and community, as well as local, state and national networking.

Successful candidates will earn the PDE Skills for Teacher Leaders Endorsement, which is added to their Level I or Level II Pennsylvania teaching certificate. The minimum requirement for acceptance into the program is an Instructional I certificate. The program may be taken prior to, concurrent with or subsequent to completion of a master's degree.

The program, which can be completed in two semesters, each consisting of two consecutive seven-week courses (12 credits) comprises: Teacher Leadership as the Gateway to Enhancing Instructional Effectiveness; Peer Mentoring and Its Impact on the Professional Community; The Role of Change in the Era of Accountability; and The School as a Cultural and Political Entity.
