Clarion University – Venango places 1,500 ‘Flags for the Fallen’

November 6, 2017

In honor of Veterans Day, Venango Veterans Club will host its fourth annual Flags for the Fallen ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 13 in Rhoades auditorium of Clarion University – Venango, Oil City.

Flags for the Fallen honors those who sacrificed their lives during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. On the hillside between the Suhr Library and Rhoades auditorium, 292 flags will be placed to represent those from Pennsylvania who fought and died. More flags will line the sidewalk between Frame and Montgomery halls, creating a "Walk for Remembrance." In total, 1,500 American flags will decorate Venango's campus to honor veterans of the United States military.

Retired United States Army veteran Richard A. Mulholland is guest speaker. After graduating from high school, Mulholland enlisted in the Army, serving for 12 years. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania National Guard Officer Candidate School and was a commissioned officer in the field artillery. Before his retirement, he served 23 years.

Mulholland and his wife have been married for 25 years, with their two sons moving on to serve in the military as well. On top of his years of service in the military, Mulholland is also the director of veterans' affairs for Venango County.
