Muslim speaker aims to shatter misinformation at ‘No, I’m Not a Terrorist’

March 9, 2016

zohra-sarwariClarion University Activities Board invites the campus and community to “No, I’m Not a Terrorist” by Orthodox Muslim Zohra Sarwari. Sarwari will take part in a panel discussion at 5:30 p.m. March 21, followed by a 7:30 p.m. lecture about terrorism and Islam in today’s society. Both events are free and will be held in Gemmell multi-purpose room.

More than half of Americans have no basic understanding of the Muslim faith, which causes discrimination and intolerance everywhere. As an Orthodox Muslim, Sarwari has faced many challenges. Using humor and personal experiences, Sarwari educates others about diversity. Her program promotes dialogue and fosters tolerance toward people of all races, religions and backgrounds, regardless of how tough and sensitive the subject matter.

Sarwari came to America from Afghanistan at age 6. Her parents could barely speak a word of English when they arrived and worked in low-paying jobs to make ends meet. Despite the circumstances, Sarwari strived to achieve success. She married at the age of 19, then went on to receive a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's in business administration. She is currently working on a bachelor's degree in Islamic studies.
