Historian visits Clarion to give talk on corporate outsourcing

March 22, 2016
Eric Loomis
Loomis

Erik Loomis, author and assistant professor of history at the University of Rhode Island, will speak at 6:30 p.m. March 24 in Hart Chapel.

His presentation, “Out of Sight: The Corporate Outsourcing of Catastrophe,” will show how the great environmental victories of 20th century America were actually labor victories. This history is presented as a call to action: When we fight for our planet, we win our own dignity as workers and citizens. Loomis calls upon the public to win regulations that follow corporations wherever they do business and puts the power back in the hands of the workers.

Loomis' work includes blogging at "Lawyers, Guns, and Money" on labor and environmental issues past and present. His pieces have also appeared on AlterNet.org, Truthout.org, C-Span Book TV and Salon.com. The author of "Out of Sight: The Long and Disturbing Story of Corporations Outsourcing Catastrophe" and "Empire of Timber: Labor Unions and the Pacific Northwest Forests in the Twentieth Century," Loomis lives in Providence, R.I. Copies of his books will be available Thursday evening.

Loomis' visit is sponsored by the Clarion Young Democrats, Clarion University History Club and Women and Gender Studies. For more information, contact Kevan Yenerall, professor of political science, at kyenerall@clarion.edu; CYD president Seth Ickes or Kathleen McIntyre.
