Clarion University Young Democrats will host a candidate’s forum with Braddock Mayor John Fetterman, one of three Democrats seeking the party’s nomination for U.S. Senate, at 7 p.m. April 4 in Hart Chapel. A Q&A will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Fetterman was born to teenage parents who were just starting out. His father worked nights to put himself through college. Fetterman followed in his father's footsteps to Albright College, where he played offensive tackle.

At age 23, Fetterman joined Big Brothers/Big Sisters, where he mentored an 8-year-old boy who had lost his father to AIDS and whose mother was also battling the disease. Before she died, Fetterman promised that he would continue to look after the boy and make sure he graduated college. Fetterman kept that promise.

As an AmeriCorps worker, Fetterman helped set up the first computer labs in Pittsburgh's Hill District and taught GED classes. He went on to earn a master's degree in public policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

He was elected mayor of Braddock, where, during the past 10 years, he is most gratified by breaking the cycle of violence that culminated in nearly five-and-a-half years without the taking of a life.
