Slattery and Park (’85) co-author book chapter

November 24, 2014

Jeanne Slattery, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Clarion University, recently co-authored with Crystal Park (’85), Ph.D., a chapter in a book published by the American Psychological Association. The book is titled “Spiritually Oriented Trauma Psychotherapy,” and their chapter is, "Spirituality and Making Meaning: Implications for Therapy with Trauma Survivors."

Slattery and Park are co-authoring a book on spirituality and trauma, which will be published by the American Psychological Association in 2015. They argue that trauma survivors often experience a loss of meaning following the disaster, which is related to poorer outcomes; yet, if survivors are able to retain or rebuild their sense of meaning, they can become resilient and perhaps even grow following their experience. The authors described the kinds of meanings that aid in becoming resilient following a trauma, as well as those that tend to pose problems.

Park, who teaches at the University of Connecticut, received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Clarion University in 1985 and her doctorate from University of Delaware in 1993.  She received Clarion University's Distinguished Achievement Award in 1999.  Slattery received her B.A. degree from Illinois State University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Miami University.  She has been teaching at Clarion University since 1984.
