Community invited to join AlumniFest celebration

May 19, 2014

Clarion University invites the community to join in next month’s Alumni Weekend celebration. While many of the activities are geared toward alumni, two of the weekend’s main events – the Distinguished Awards banquet June 6 and AlumniFest June 7 – are open to the community.

Alumni Weekend

The Distinguished Awards recognize outstanding professional and public service achievements by Clarion graduates and community members. This year’s honorees are: Dr. Arthur Barlow, Distinguished Faculty; the Hon. Robert L. Boyer (’86), Venango College Distinguished Alumni; Dr. Teresa Swartz (’74), Distinguished Alumni; and Hank Suhr, Distinguished Volunteer. The banquet is from 6 to 9 p.m. June 6 in the multi-purpose room of Gemmell Student Complex. A cocktail hour precedes the banquet from 5 to 6 p.m. Dress is business formal, and cost per person is $75. Reservations are due by May 30.

Alumnus Luke Zacherl (’04) will return to Clarion with his band, NOMaD, to perform during Alumni Fest, from 5 to 10 p.m. June 7 on the lawn of Gemmell Student Complex. The popular Ellwood City-based band, described as hard-rocking country, includes Zacherl on fiddle, David August on lead vocals, Jay Pfeifer on guitar, Bobby Kunkel on drums, George Elliott on bass and “Suitcase” Johnny Waclo on guitar.

“I accepted the invitation to play at Alumni Weekend, because every time I step on stage – be it at the local bar or sharing the stage with other national acts – I’m using the education I received from the music department at Clarion University,” Zacherl said. “I owe every show to (the music department faculty) for giving me the skills to perform and do what I love more than anything. It is with the utmost respect to them that I go out there and do what I do best.”

Jimmy Swogger and Friends will also provide live entertainment at Alumni Fest. Along with entertainment, tickets will also cover “A Taste of Clarion,” featuring dishes from local eateries, served picnic-style. Local breweries and wineries will give complimentary samples.

Tickets are $10 for children and $25 for adults. Dress is casual.

Register by May 30 for the Distinguished Awards banquet and by May 31 for Alumni Fest by visiting www.clarion.edu/alumniweekend, or by calling Lisa Deemer at Clarion University Foundation, Inc., 814- 393-2637 or emailing her at ldeemer@cuf-inc.org.
