Traumatic Brain Injury Support group hosts Brain Safety Fair and Helmet Giveaway

February 24, 2014

Clarion Area Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group will host a Brain Safety Fair and Bike Helmet Giveaway in coordination with Butler Brain Injury Support Group’s 9th Annual Brain Injury Awareness Day, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 1 at Clearview Mall, Butler.

Butler Brain Injury Support Group will have community tables with displays from more than 20 organizations and to connect brain injury survivors and their families, as well as individuals with other disabilities, to new options and resources. The event also allows people to meet with and talk to survivors and families and gives them an opportunity to join one of the support groups that will be represented.

The Brain Safety Fair and Helmet Give Away is sponsored by the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania and will be hosted by Clarion Area Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group, the Clarion University National Student Speech Language Hearing Association and Slippery Rock University recreational and physical therapy students. The fair features family-friendly presentations and activities that demonstrate how the brain works and ways to keep it safe. Trained volunteers will challenge participants to complete a series of tasks to demonstrate the many important functions controlled by the brain. After completion of the activities, attendees of the safety fair will receive complimentary bicycle helmets, fitted to ensure safety in wearing. Sizes will vary from toddler through adult.

According to the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania, most brain injuries can be prevented. Each year 50,000 people die from brain injuries and 80,000 to 90,000 people experience long-term disability.
