The Master of Science in Communication provides an integrated program for individuals pursuing careers in mass media, journalism, corporate communication, and public relations. Our goal is to provide a thorough theoretical base, coupled with professional experiences and production, to enable students to design, produce and manage media communication for a wide variety of functions. Required courses in writing, theory, research and production provide students with a broad base yet allow for applications in their specific chosen area. Graduates of the program work in public relations, media management, corporate communication, journalism, broadcasting, and video production. The program also provides a sound foundation for doctoral studies in communication, mass media studies, journalism, and broadcasting.

Beginning in the Summer of 2007, the Master of Science degree will become a hybrid program, with the majority of the coursework delivered via the Internet. Students will begin the program in the summer with a one-week on-campus intensive start to their coursework and to meet their peers. As part of a student cohort, you are invited to spend the first week of your beginning summer term with us at Diane L. Reinhard Villages, a luxury student apartment complex located less than a mile from the university campus. Here, you can form friendships and interpersonal connections to sustain you through your academic program, career, and the rest of your life.  The work will continue through the summer, fall and spring sessions entirely online, ending with a second one-week on-campus session in the second summer. This accelerated course of study allows students to earn a graduate degree from a highly respected program while continuing employment or residing anywhere in the world.

The online master’s degree program in mass media arts and journalism is a 36-credit curriculum. As the our program of study shows, the broad-basted program imparts a range of communication skills and theory. Students may pursue a thesis, internship, or portfolio option.
