The purpose of this index is to provide access to the resources available on the Department of Library Science Web site. While the main menu on the department home page provides a classified approach to these resources, this index is designed to provide direct access to specific information.
Names of individuals are not indexed. If information on a particular topic is available in more than one place, the descriptor is followed by numbers enclosed in "pipe stems" for each occurrence, e.g., | 1 | 2 |. The source with the most complete information is given first. All references and locators appear as hyperlinks. See references refer from unused terms to authorized terms. See also references refer from a broader concept to a more specific one or to a non-hierarchically related concept. References to subheadings are in the form Main head--subheading, e.g., Web-based instruction (see also Graduate programs--distance education).
Capitalization. Capitalize the first word in each main heading or reference. In inverted headings and references, also capitalize the first word to the right of the comma. Capitalize proper nouns. Capitalize titles headline style. Capitalize initialisms and acronyms following the usage of the text. Do not capitalize subheadings or other words.
Corporate names. Enter in direct order, omitting initial articles. Prefer the official name of the body, but give an initialism or acronym, if known, in parentheses following the name. Make a "see" reference from the initialism or acronym.
Filing. Arrange entries word by word following the principle of nothing before something. Ignore all punctuation and diacritical marks. If a heading other than a personal name begins with an article, omit the article.
Format of entries. Begin each main heading or reference at the first preset indent. Indent each subheading five spaces beyond the main heading. Continue this pattern if additional levels of indentation are required.
Locators. All locators are hyperlinks. If only one locator is required, the descriptor itself is the locator. If more than one locator is required, the descriptor is followed by numbers enclosed in "pipe stems" for each occurrence, e.g., | 1 | 2 |. Precede the first pipe stem by two spaces.
Personal names. Do not index.
References. All references are hyperlinks. "See" references are entered as follows: unused term (formatted as main heading or subheading, as appropriate), space, open parentheses, see preferred term (formatted as main heading or subheading, as appropriate), close parentheses.
Activities, Student (see Student organizations)
"See also" references follow the same format and follow locators if present.
Course schedule (see also Course cycle, Graduate)
References to subheadings are in the form Main head--subheading.
Separate multiple references by a semicolon, preceding the last reference by and.
