A Guide to Asian-American Resources in the
             Clarion University Libraries and on the Internet

                   The purpose of this guide is to help students and faculty locate information about

                   Asian Americans in the Clarion University Libraries and on the Internet.  


                  Books

                            To locate BOOKS about Asian Americans in the University Libraries, go to the
                       University Libraries Home Page, click on Library Catalog, click on Local catalog,
                       select Subject Search, and search using the following subject search terms:
 
                              Amerasians
                              Asian Americans
 
                       You can narrow your subject search to a specific country of origin:
 
                              Chinese Americans
                              Hmong Americans
                              Japanese Americans
                              Korean Americans

 
                   Journal Articles

                          To locate JOURNAL ARTICLES about Asian-Americans, go to the University
                       Libraries' Home Page, click on Journal Access, and then click on the database you
                       wish to search.

  ProQuest Direct

After you enter the database you must either check a specific  module select All Database. Then click on the continue button.  

In the text box, type in the word(s) or phrase(s) for which you want to search.

Enter a search word such as Asian Americans, Chinese Americans, Hmong Americans, Japanese     Americans or Korean Americans.

To perform a subject search, click on Advanced Search, select Subject as the
field to search, and enter the search terms,  Asian Americans or Japanese Americans.

Infotrac

Click on Expanded Academic ASAP, Health Reference Center, or Business Index ASAP.

To perform a keyword search, click on Key Words and enter Asian Americans, Amerasians, Chinese culture.

  To perform a subject search, click on Subject Guide and enter the search term Asian Americans, Chinese Americans, Hmong Americans, Japanese Americans, or Korean Americans.

EBSCO

Select Academic Search FullTEXT Elite, Business Source Elite, or Health source Plus.

To perform a key word search, enter search terms such as Asian Americans, Chinese Americans, Hmong Americans, Japanese Americans, or Korean Americans.

To perform a subject search, click on BROWSE SUBJECTS, and then enter search terms such as Asian Americans, Chinese Americans, Hmong Americans, Japanese Americans, or Korean Americans. 

Lexis-Nexis

Select any of the services listed (General News Topics is a good place to start) and
enter the search terms, Asian Americans, Chinese Americans, Hmong Americans,
Japanese Americans, or Korean Americans
.  If you are looking for biographical information, click on Reference. Select the Biographical Information service, and search by a person's name.

WEBSPIRS

From the resulting screen, click on WebSPIRS.
Choose the Databases such as Essay and General Literature, MLA International Bibliography.


World Wide Web

To find WEB SITES with information about Asian Americans, go to the University Home Page, click on World Wide Web, and choose a search engine, such as Alta Vista or Infoseek.  At the search screen, type in the topic you wish to research. When using the Internet for research, use the most specific search term possible.  For example, using the broad search term Asian Americans will produce numerous Web sites, but using a more specific search term, such as Japanese cuisine, will produce fewer and more relevant results.  If one particular search term does not yield the desired results, experiment with other search terms and phrases.  Examples of Web sites found on the Internet include:

Browsing for Books in the University Libraries
 

To BROWSE for books about Asian Americans in Carlson Library, search the shelves in the Reference Room,  within the E184 range of call numbers.  Others can be found in 
Carlson Library within the qE184 range of call numbers.  Children’s nonfiction books can be found within the j973.04 range of call numbers. If you are looking for media, you can browse on the media shelves on the second floor Multi Purpose Room within the E184 range of call numbers. 

It is also possible to browse the collection in Online using a call number search in the Catalog.
