Outdoor Recreation

The Department Provides:

The Clarion University students with a place to rent equipment for a small fee and be able to enjoy everything western Pennsylvania has to offer in the outdoors. OREC has a 25-foot climbing wall for students to use as a recreational workout or a wonderfully rewarding hobby. OREC is located in Clarion University's Student Recreation Center and rents many different items to students and non-students.

Equipment Available:

$5 per day student fee, $3 refundable if returned in good condition

  • Bikes (Locks, Carrier, Kid-carriers)
  • Roller Blades
  • Tents (two, or four-man)
  • Skis (cross-country boots, poles)

Refundable $5 Deposit (for students)

  • Inner-tubes
  • Helmets (Bike, Roller-Blade)
  • Back-packs
  • Pads (Hockey, Roller- Blade)
  • Balls (Football, Kickball, Soccer, Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball)
  • Coolers
  • Cones (Small, Medium, Large)
  • Baseball Bats
  • Tennis Rackets

Non students may rent the same equipment for a $5 fee.

All equipment must be returned to the Outdoor Recreation Department within 24hrs of the rental.

Group Climbing is available with 24 hours advanced notice.

CLIMBING WALL

 

The Clarion University Climbing Wall is 25 feet high and 36 feet wide. Everyone is invited to climb.

No prior experience or training is required. There are seven main routs that are structured for your enjoyment. There are easy routs for the beginner and some more advanced for experienced climbers.

A certified staff member is on hand for the safety of everyone who wants to enjoy the wall. The wall can also be rented for groups (appointments are required)

Climbing Wall Information

Rules:

A waiver must be filled out each semester

Climbing shoes and a harness must be worn at all times

You must be belay certified to be ableto belay others.(Belay cources are availablethroughout the semester)To keep your certification you must belay at least eight times a semester.

Membership

Students with a valid Student I.D. are permitted along with community members with an appropriate pass.*No one under 18 is permitted unless approved by management.

Instructional Workshops
These fun and practical workshops focus on basic development and a variety of more in-depth and comprehensive experiences. Workshops are usually conducted in one day and are held in the Recreation Center or nearby outdoor locations. Through cooperative learning and practical hands on experiences, everyone present will gain more knowledge.

Registration and Fees
Registration for one day and week-end trips can be made at the Rec Center front desk 10 days prior to the departure date. The cost for most overnight trips will usually be $5.00 per day to cover the costs of meals and must be paid when you register to reserve your spot. Equipment rental and transportation is included. Example of a trip is white water rafting, biking, paint ball and more.
