This program targets minority students from specific school districts across the state. Our staff works closely with the school district to recruit students, inform parents, meet with interested students, and plan the academy prior to students' arrival. Acceptance into the Academy is based on student desire to attend, recommendations from teachers and/or counselors, and parental permission.
Approximately 35-50 youth attend each Academy. Programs are held over 2 ½ days on Clarion's campus. The focus of the Academy is on promoting leadership skills in students, decision making in leaders, career choices, team building, and problem solving. Presenters include HSEC staff, University faculty, and leaders in the community, government, & business world, peers, and national known individuals. The Academy is offered free of charge to participants. Students are housed on campus in separate facilities from University students.
As an incentive to participate in the Academy and focus on future goals, students accepted in the Leadership Academy are accepted at Clarion University upon high school graduation.
