Richards directs Miami Jumbotron

William "Chip" Richards III '80 attends every Florida Marlins and Miami Dolphins games without a ticket, because he is the video director for the Jumbotron screen. He also directs the live TV program to studio audiences.

Richards, who majored in communication while at Clarion, does the job for fun besides his regular job, as assistant production manager for the public broadcasting station WLRN-TV in Miami. He works in the educational programs division.

At Pro Player Stadium, the home of the Marlins and the Dolphins, Richards has worked on two Super Bowls, and several college bowl games including the Orange Bowl, the Carquest Bowl, and the Heritage Bowl. "When I worked on my first Super Bowl (XXIII), a guy from the NFL said 'this will probably be the only time you will get to do this'," he says. "When Super Bowl XXIX rolled around, I saw the guy again and told him I was still there."

Recently, one of Richards' jobs at the stadium was to provide Dolphins uplink coverage for ESPN for the NFL Draft.

Richards is also a member of the National Academy of Theatre Arts and Sciences (NATAS) and the Miami Press Club.

"Being able to get an internship with WLRN through Clarion University was the best thing I could have done," he says. "I took it after my senior year of college. This enabled me to finish the requirements for my degree and I also got to take the job that was offered to me after the internship. If I had to go back to school after the internship, the job probably wouldn't have been available.

"WLRN has really helped me in allowing me to be flexible in my job. I have worked there for 18 years and can take time off when I need to work at Pro Player Stadium. I started out at part-time and then I went to full-time. I have a really good time doing my job," says Richard.

Richards, his wife, Nancy, and his son William Richards IV, live in Weston, FL.
