Jack Davis '74 recently stepped down as head wrestling coach after completing five years as head coach and his 22nd season overall with the Clarion wrestling staff. Davis will continue serving as an assistant professor in the department of health and physical education.
Davis has been part of the Clarion University wrestling tradition for 26 seasons,
including four years as a wre
stler (1970-74), 17 as an assistant coach
(1976-92) and five as the head coach (1993-97).
"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me, the wrestlers and Clarion University wrestling during my tenure," says Davis. "I've had many special moments here that will last me a lifetime. I just felt this was the right time for me to step down and I wish the program every success in the future."
Athletic Director Bob Carlson thanked Davis for his years of dedicated service to the wrestling program and Clarion University.
Davis, who replaced long-time Clarion head coach Robert Bubb in 1992, compiled a five-year dual meet record of 43-34-4 and led the Eagles to Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) titles in 1994 and 1995, a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crown in 1994, and was named PSAC and EWL "Coach of the Year" in 1994.
Davis' wrestlers won 16 individual PSAC titles, 11 EWL crowns, placed 9 NCAA Division I All-Americans, and an NCAA Champion.
Davis, a native of Harvey's Lake, and a 1970 graduate of Lake Lehman High School, as a wrestler, posted a career record at Clarion of 36-30-1 with 11 falls. He was 22-14-1 his senior year at 134 pounds and placed second at the PSAC's. After graduating from Clarion, he earned a master's degree in health and physical education at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN, in 1975. Davis then returned to Clarion as a teacher/assistant wrestling coach for 1975-76.
