As the president of the Alumni Board, I felt a need for direct communication to the
general alumni body. We plan to have members of the Board use this column for that
purpose. In addition to expressing our views, we hope to respond to questions and comments
we receive from you, so please let us hear from you. In this first column, I would like to
invite you to become more active in your relationship with the University. We have an
exceptional professional staff in the Alumni Relations
Office; one that will be glad to assist
you in organizing alumni groups, in arranging social activities for your group, and in
setting up visits to the campus.
If you haven't been back to Clarion for several years, I urge you to make it a point to visit the campus. You may be amazed at the growth yet pleased to find that several of the "landmark" buildings you know so well are still an integral part of the campus landscape. While these buildings may evoke fond memories, it would be much more special if some of those friends you had while you were here could return with you. Why not call some friends and come "home" for a day or two. If you have lost contact with old friends, perhaps the Alumni Relations Office can help you locate them.
Most of you know that the Alumni Board takes an active role in planning the activities for Homecoming and Alumni Day. We would like to add other activities on a regional level. On September 21, a group of alumni attended a Pirates baseball game with a pre-game tailgate party. Clarion's own Pete Vuckovich is the Pirates pitching coach. We are also planning a trip to see the NBA New Jersey Nets, who are coached by Clarion alumnus John Calipari. Would you be interested in something like this? It wouldn't have to be a trip in this area, and it doesn't have to be a trip to a sporting event. Perhaps a theater trip or a trip to some point of interest would have greater appeal. Let us know what interests you. Remember, the main thrust of any activity is to get alumni of Clarion University together. We want to see more alumni engaged in alumni related activities.
In closing, I urge you to contact us with any suggestions or ideas you have that you believe will get more alumni in touch with the University. Better yet, why not come to a Homecoming or Alumni Day and share those ideas directly with us?
