Policy for Student Teaching as a Post
Baccalaureate Student
Date Issued: 06-29-06
Date Effective: 06-29-06
Issued By: College of Education and Human
Services
Purpose: To provide a coordinated approach and
effective preparation to determine the post baccalaureate student’s readiness
for the required Pennsylvania Teacher Certification student teaching field
experience.
Policy: In the case of a student holding a
baccalaureate degree without teacher certification who enters the College of
Education and Human Services for the purpose of completing requirements
necessary for Pennsylvania teacher certification, the student’s transcript and
any related credentials must be reviewed. This review will determine what
additional coursework may be required and successfully completed prior to the
beginning of the student teaching field experience. In the case where the
student transfers in methods courses and similar field experience credits from
another institution of higher education, the student must be evaluated by the
designated College faculty and administrator. The evaluation will determine if
all pedagogical competencies are met prior to the beginning of the student
teaching experience. This is of particular importance if the student’s
transcript identifies any student teaching credits with grades below B.
Procedure:
- The student will meet with the
department chair to determine what additional coursework is needed prior to
the student teaching experience.
- The department chair will identify the
student’s advisor.
- The department chair, with the approval
of the College Dean, will determine if any intervention independent study
coursework is required and the faculty member (s) who will complete these
requirements with the student.
- The department chair or designee will
develop a written contract to be signed by the student.
- When all requirements in the signed
contract are successfully completed, the student may then move into the
student teaching experience.
