Purpose of Award

The Charles R. Flack Scholarship in Library Science is funded through contributions to the Flack Fund administered by the Clarion University Foundation. The purpose of the scholarship is to give personal encouragement and financial support to a promising student who seeks a career in librarianship. One $700.00 award will be made for 2002-2003.

Mr. Charles R. Flack was head of the Department of Library Science Department at Clarion State College from 1941 until his retirement in 1965.

Eligibility

The scholarship is available to all qualified students who have serious interest in careers in librarianship and who meet the selection criteria.

Selection Criteria

  1. Admission to the Bachelor of Science in Education degree program at Clarion University for full-time, continuous study; a sophomore or junior who has completed nine to twelve credits in the Department of Library Science.
    or
    Admission to the Master of Science in Library Science degree program at Clarion University for full-time continuous study and completed one semester of graduate study and has earned a minimum of nine (9) graduate credits.

  2. Evidence of professional potential in librarianship based upon earned grades and a written statement of personal and professional goals.

  3. Evidence of significant contributions to the purposes and activities of the Department of Library Science.

  4. Since Mr. Flack was physically disabled, preference shall be given to a physically disabled student who meets the above criteria.

Selection Procedures

  1. Student is admitted to the undergraduate program as a full-time student and is at the sophomore or junior level.
    or
    Student is admitted to the Master of Science in Library Science degree program as a full-time student; has completed one semester of graduate study and has earned at least nine (9) graduate credits.

  2. The department Awards Committee will evaluate application forms, rank applicants according to established criteria, and determine awardee.

  3. The award is administered through the Clarion University Foundation to ensure compliance with university, state and federal student financial assistance regulations.
