Our internship program involves employment in accounting during the
Summer, Fall and Spring Semesters of a student's senior year. To qualify,
students must have completed ACTG 350: Intermediate Accounting; ACTG 351:
Accounting for Equities; ACTG 352: Cost Accounting; and ACTG 353: Federal
Taxes, prior to the start of an internship. Students applying for a full-time
internship in public accounting should have completed ACTG 354: Auditing,
prior to the start of an internship.
The program offers up to nine academic credits for interns. The credits
received will be recorded as "Free Electives" on the student checksheet.
Up to nine credits will be offered for a full-time work experience with
a public accounting firm, corporation or tax-exempt organization.
The internship is designed to provide a practical background in the
field of accountancy. The experience will enable students to gain valuable
insights into the profession without permanent commitments on the part
of either the student or the employer.
Responsibilities of the Employer
Student Work Schedule
Internship assignments must provide appropriate accounting experience
to enable the University to grant credit. Although the work experience
may vary depending on the firm visited, the experience should satisfy the
Chairperson, Department of Accountancy, so that a recommendation for credit
can be made.
Interviews and Offers
The accounting firms may select, in any manner, the students they would
like to interview. The student applications should facilitate this selection.
The actual interview in some cases will be held at Clarion University.
However,
the firms may prefer to hold a first or second interview at their own
location. That decision will be left to the discretion of the individual
firm.
Offers of employment should be made directly to the students. If a student
does not accept the initial offer, the firm may make subsequent offers
to other students.
Salary Rate
All national and international firms should compensate interns on a
consistent basis. Some exceptions may be made for other firms. If a firm
or agency cannot pay a salary, the student may accept a stipend to cover
travel and lunches.
Evaluation
Evaluation of the interns is an important part of the process of granting
credit to the student. Therefore, each firm will receive evaluation forms
during the work period. These forms should be completed and submitted to
the Chairperson, Department of Accountancy, shortly after the work period
is completed.
Responsibilities of the Department
of Accountancy
Coordination
The Accounting Internship Program will be coordinated by the Department
of Accountancy. The Department of Accountancy will provide an advisor for
each student intern, determine that all educational requirements have been
satisfied and recommend academic credit.
Placement
Student interviews with accounting firms will be arranged by the Department
of Accountancy. The Department of Accountancy will notify a student when
a firm is interested in setting up an interview. The student will then
contact the firm to determine a mutually satisfactory interview date. Students
must then notify the Department of Accountancy of the interview time and
of any subsequent offer.
Timing of Program
It is intended that full-time interns work ten weeks of the Spring Semester
and return to the campus for the last five weeks. Two five-week courses
of instruction are offered. Part-time interns may work throughout the Spring
Semester.
The ten-week period may begin as late as the first day of the scheduled
Spring Semester. However, some firms may wish to have the students begin
at an earlier date in December or January. The important point is that
the firms generally must provide a ten-week work period to be completed
early April.
Responsibilities of the Student
Application
To be eligible for an internship, students must have completed ACTG
350: Intermediate Accounting; ACTG 351: Accounting for Equities; ACTG 352:
Cost Accounting; ACTG 353: Federal Taxes, prior to the start of an internship.
Students applying for a full-time internship in public accounting should
have completed ACTG 354: Auditing, prior to the start of an internship.
Student applicants must complete an application form and return it to
the office of the Chairperson of the Department of Accountancy, Room 334
Still Hall. A resume and transcript must be attached.
Offers of Employment
Students should respond to an offer within one week of receiving it.
This should be adhered to in order to allow the firm the opportunity to
make subsequent offers to other students.
Registration
During the Fall Semester, full-time interns should pre-register for
nine credits under CO-OP 420, section 71, by completing the learning agreement
and also pre-register for the three-credit accounting course (ACTG 490)
for the last five weeks of the Spring Semester. Also, students may select
ACTG 461: International Accounting. This course fulfills the international
requirement. Part-time interns should only pre-register for one to eight
credits under CO-OP 320, Section 71, by completing the learning agreement.
Term Paper and Daily Log
A term paper will be required of all student interns. The topic of the
paper should be arranged with the Department Chairperson.
Students should maintain a daily log summary and submit the summary
as an appendix to the term paper. Also, a critique of the internship should
be included as an appendix. Both the term paper and appendices should be
typed.
