16th INDUCTION BANQUET SET The Clarion University "Sports Hall of Fame" Committee has announced that seven new members will be inducted as the 16th "Hall of Fame" Class in 2004. Induction ceremonies are scheduled for Friday, April 30th at Chandler Dining Hall beginning at 7pm. A social is set for 5:30pm at Moore Hall (former President's residence) on campus. Ticket orders are being handled by Associate A.D. Marie Scovron, Room 111 Tippin Gymnasium. Tickets are $25 per person and are available by contacting Scovron at 814-393-1989. Checks should be made payable to Clarion "Sports Hall of Fame". The new inductees include seven former athletes with two elected in the honorary category. In alphabetical order the new inductees are; Lynn Armstrong (football), Ronald R. Botz (basketball), Jack Davis (wrestler/coach), Terence M. "Terry" McFetridge (football), Kwame R. Morton (basketball), Joyce (Skoog) Robillard (women's swimming) and John S. Shropshire - Deceased (football/administrator). "I'd like to congratulate the new inductees on their selection to the Hall of Fame," said Clarion Athletic Director Bob Carlson. "They have made a very significant contribution to Clarion Athletics and we look forward to their return on April 30. We invite everyone to come out and help us welcome them into the prestigious Hall of Fame. I'd also like to thank the Hall of Fame Committee on doing another outstanding job in the selection process." Enclosed Below is a Snapshot of the Clarion Hall of Fame Careers of our 2004 Inductees: LYNN ARMSTRONG - Football 1968 Clarion University Grad - Secondary Ed./History Lynn Armstrong was a
talented offensive guard for the Golden Eagle football team from 1964-67.
He helped pave the way for Clarion to post a 4-year record of 28-7-2, win
two PSAC-West titles (1966, 67) and the team's first PSAC crown (1966)
under coach Al Jacks. The 1966 team posted a 10-0 overall record,
including winning the PSAC title over West Chester by a RONALD R. BOTZ - Basketball - 1960 Clarion University Grad - Secondary Ed./Social Studies Ron Botz was an outstanding basketball player at Clarion for four seasons from 1957-60. The guard had a single season high of 365 points in the 1957-58 season, ranked #2 in the state in scoring and posted a single game high of 35 points. In the 1958-59 season he set the Clarion single game scoring record with 46 points in a game and ended his career as the #2 scorer in Clarion history with 1,098 points behind former great Don Stemmerich (1,200; 1950-53). Ron was a three-time All-PSAC selection and a Second Team All-State choice during his career under head coach Tom Carnahan. An All-State basketball player at Parker High and a 1956 graduate, Botz taught at Clarion Area (1960-63) and then went to A.C. Valley in 1964 and started what was a tremendous boys basketball coaching career leading the Falcons to a PIAA runner-up finish in 1973, 5-time Clarion County League Champions and three-time D-9 Champs. He was Clarion County League "Coach of the Year" three times and had an unbelievable 29-year coaching record of 409-286 prior to retiring in 1993. Ron and wife Judy reside in Parker and have three children including daughters Paula, Ronda and Leah. JACK DAVIS - Wrestler/Coach -1974 Clarion University Grad - Elementary Education Jack Davis made a strong contribution to the Clarion wrestling program as an athlete, assistant coach and head coach. He wrestled at Clarion from 1971-74 and had a record of 36-30-1, including a 22-14-1 mark and PSAC runner-up placing his senior year. Clarion won 3 PSAC team titles and had a combined team record of 61-10. Davis became a teacher in thePhysical Education Department in Fall of 1975 and became coach Bob Bubb's assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 1976-92. He helped the Eagles win 8 PSAC and 1 EWL title, post 19 Division I All-Americans and 8 top 20 NCAA Division I Tournament finishes. Head wrestling coach from 1993-97 (5 seasons), he led his teams to 2 EWL and 1 PSAC title, coached 8 Division I All-Americans, 1 national champion, 16 PSAC winners and 11 EWL champs. Under Davis Clarion finished 12th at the NCAA D-I Tournament in 1996, 14th in 1997, and 15th in both 1994 and 95. A 1970 graduate of Lake Lehman High, Jack continues to teach in the Clarion University HPE Department. He and wife Jackie reside in Clarion and have two sons, Rocky and Scott. TERENCE M. "TERRY" McFETRIDGE - Football - 1985 Clarion University Grad - Business Terry McFetridge was a record-setting wide receiver at Clarion from 1981-85 and helped Clarion win PSAC-West titles in 1983 and 1984, plus the PSAC crown in 1983. In the 1983 PSAC title game against East Stroudsburg in Hershey, Pa., McFetridge caught the game-winning td late in the fourth quarter helping Clarion to a 27-14 win. The Eagles were 9-2 in 1983, 8-2 in 1985, 7-3 in 1982 & 84 and 6-4 in 1981. In 1982 Terry grabbed 43 passes for 915 yards (Clarion record), and 8 td's, while in 1983 he latched onto 50 aerials for 945 yards (Clarion record) 11 td's. Hurt after 2 games in 1984, Terry returned in 1985 to catch 36 passes for 690 yards and 3 td's. He set PSAC and Clarion records for career catches (140) and receiving yards (2,711) and an Eagle record 25 td's. A two-time A.P. All-American, he was first team PSAC, Pgh-Press, Post-Gazette and D-18 in 1982, 83 and 85. He also received a Dapper Dan Award in 1985. Playing under coaches Al Jacks, Charlie Ruslavage and Gene Sobolewski, the Golden Eagles posted a 37-14 record during McFetridge's tenure. A 1981 graduate of Gateway High School, Terry and wife Kathleen currently reside in Canonsburg, Pa.. KWAME R. MORTON - Basketball - 1994 Clarion University Grad - Management Kwame Morton came to Clarion from Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. in the Fall of 1990 and went on to become the most prolific scorer in PSAC and Clarion history. A 4-year starter at guard (1991-94) under coach Ron Righter, Kwame tallied a PSAC record 2,543 career points and set 21 Clarion and 10 PSAC records in he process. Among the combined PSAC & Clarion records are career points, single season points 845 (1994), 76 straight games hitting a three-point field goal, 411 career three pointers, 513 single season freshman points (1991) and much more. He owns the Clarion single game record with 56 points against Slippery Rock in 1994 and also scored 27 consecutive team points for the Eagles in that game. In 1994 alone he he led all NCAA Division II players with a 32.5ppg average, voted the Division II "Player of the Year", a consensus First tem All American including being named to the NABC/Sears First Team All-America squad. A first team PSAC-West selection in 1992-94, he was the PSAC-West "Rookie of the Year" in 1991. He played in all of Clarion's 105 games during his career and helped the Eagles to a 67-38 record. Married to April Thompson (Beaver Falls), the couple reside in Brooklyn, N.Y. and have six children including Cassandra, Kwame Jr., Kaleb, Kamel, Glory and Kamille. He is an assistant principal at P.S. 188. JOYCE (SKOOG) ROBILLARD - Swimming - 1984 Clarion University Grad - Business Joyce Skoog had a tremendous impact on the Clarion Women's Swimming teams from 1981-84 as a breaststroke and Individual Medley specialist. She helped lead the Golden Eagles to 4 NCAA Division II National Championships and 4 PSAC team titles under head coach Becky Leas. Joyce was a 16-time career All-American including winning an individual NCAA title in 1984 in the 200 Individual Medley and set an NCAA record. A 5-time NCAA champion (4 relays), she was a captain of the 1984 squad and won 6 of 6 events at the PSAC championships setting 4 PSAC records in the process. At her graduation she held Clarion team records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, 200 and 400 I.M. and the 200 and 400 medley relays. Clarion had an amazing 37-6 dual record during her career, with the 6 losses coming against D-I teams. A native of Pittsburgh and a 1980 graduate of Penn Hills High School, Joyce currently resides in Muncie, Indiana with her husband Steve Robillard and has five children including Carl, Taylor, Jay, Alec and Parker. JOHN S. SHROPSHIRE - (Deceased) Football/Administrator - 1961 Clarion University Grad - Secondary Ed./Social Studies John S. Shropshire was a major contributor to Clarion University Athletics as an undergraduate athlete, administrator and a coach. A native of Pittsburgh (Homewood) and a 1956 graduate of Westinghouse High, John came to Clarion and was a starter for the football team for three years (1958-60) on both the offensive and defensive lines under head coach Ernest "Turk" Johnson. He helped Clarion to a 6-1-1 record in 1959 and a three-year record of 12-11-2. After graduating in 1961, Shropshire taught and was head basketball coach at Central Dauphin East (1961-72), but returned to Clarion in 1972 as assistant director of Admissions. In 1978 he was named Director of Admissions and in 1983 was named Dean of Enrollment Management until his retirement on January 3, 2000. During his years he was a strong supporter of all Clarion athletic teams and helped a large number of student athletes reach graduation through scholarships, counseling, etc. He was also the Clarion University Boxing Club coach for many years and a member of countless organizations and groups on campus. A member of the Clarion University Sports Hall of Fame Committee from 1993-2001, he received the Clarion Distinguished Service Award in 1999. A Clarion County Commissioner from 2000-2001, he passed away on June 5, 2001. Receiving his award will be his wife Jamie, who resides in Shippenville. John had two sons, Phillip and Christopher, and a daughter Alicia. CLARION NOTES: The 2004 induction class brings the Hall of Fame total to 101...The first class in 1989 had 11 members.
