SUMMER ACADEMIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS






 

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Honors courses meet general education requirements and compliment major and minor coursework. To earn an honors degree, a student must:

  • complete a minimum of 21 honors credits

  • maintain the academic standards of the program

    • Freshman = >3.0

    • Sophomore = >3.25

    • Junior = >3.4

  • three of the 21 honors credits must be earned in the student’s major area of study. Typically, Honors 450 (Senior Project) satisfies this requirement

HONORS CURRICULUM

HON 128 & 129: Modes of Discourse (6 credits)
An interdisciplinary course which aims to integrate the student’s production of both written and spoken discourse. The course is an alternative method of teaching communication, and draws upon the skills of instructors from English and Speech, Communication, and Theatre.

Enrollment: Required of all Honors students. Typically taken in the Fall and Spring Semester of the Freshman year. Hon128 replaces SC 113, and HON 129 replaces ENG 111 of General Education Requirements.

HON 130: Special Topics Humanities (3 credits)
An interdisciplinary course in the humanities required of students enrolled in the Honors Program. The course focuses on human values, beliefs, and accomplishments as expressed in art, music, literature, philosophy, and religion.

Enrollment: Required of all Honors students. Typically taken in the Freshman year and offered in the Spring Semester. HON 130 replaces 3 of the 9 required credits in Arts and Humanities.

HON 230: Special Topics Science/Mathematics (3 credits)
An interdisciplinary course in the natural sciences and/or mathematics required of students enrolled in the Honors Program. The course content focuses on basic principles in the natural sciences and/or mathematics and their development within the context of human civilization.

Enrollment: Required of all Honors students. Typically taken in the Sophomore year and offered in the Fall Semester. HON 230 replaces 3 of the 9 required credits in Math and Sciences.

HON 240: Special Topics Social Sciences (3 credits)
An interdisciplinary course in the social sciences required of students enrolled in the Honors Program. The course content focuses on human civilization from the perspective of the social scientist.

Enrollment: Required of all Honors students. Typically taken in the Sophomore year and offered in the Spring Semester. HON 240 replaces 3 of the 9 required credits in Social Sciences.

HON 350: Junior Seminar (3 credits)
An interdisciplinary seminar foundational to the development of the Senior Project and career planning.  It it crucial in bridging the Honors sequence with the final project as it develops presentation and portfolio skills while requiring students to develop a prospectus for their senior project and linking with a faculty mentor.

Enrollment: Required of all Honors students or this course may be substituted with study abroad or internship. Typically taken in the Junior year and offered in the Spring Semester. These credits are put toward your general education electives.  Substitutions must be approved by the Honors Program Director.

HON 450: Senior Project (3 credits)
A scholarly project of an interdisciplinary nature including the student’s major area of study. A public presentation of the outcome of the project is required.

Enrollment: Required of all Honors students or this course may be substituted with a research seminar or independent study within the major. Any substitution must receive prior approval by the Honors Program Director. Enrollment is typically in Fall or Spring Semester of the Senior year. These credits are put towards your electives or possibly your major.
