Auditory Integration Training: Autism’s Controversial Therapy
Auditory Integration
Training [AIT] was designed to eliminate the sound sensitivity often found in
those with autism. This sensitivity to sound has been linked to a lack of
response to his/her environment. The individual may disregard noise and may
even appear deaf. Currently, controversy surrounds AIT because the American
Speech-Language Hearing Association considers it unethical. Although several
studies have been conducted, no empirical evidence exists to support its
efficacy. Through a national survey of practicing clinicians, professional
opinions and personal success rates regarding AIT have been gathered. The
results show that some therapists are dedicated to continuing the treatment
while others are opposed. The contrast of responses is indicative of the
controversy around AIT. |
