HON 128: MODES OF DISCOURSE
Taken: Fall semester of freshman year.
Faculty: Ralph M. Leary, Ph.D. and Barry McCauliff, M.A.
Course Description:
The primary goal of the Modes of Discourse class is
community building. Through their creation of an active learning
community, Modes not only provides a basis for interaction between
students, but also for critical thinking. As a linked, interdisciplinary
offering, this course is foundational to Honors curriculum. Modes
satisfies the General Education requirement for English111 and SCT113
and also fulfills a values flag. The collaborative effort of these
faculty members to the Honors community is an integral part of the
Honors Program's success. The group will take a fall trip to Cook Forest
and a spring tour of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Cleveland
Museum of Art. The purpose of the spring trip is to give the students a
basis for their final paper, an analysis of Jon Berger's essay "Ways of
Seeing." (This course fulfills the general education
requirement of SC113.)
