THEME:
“Women in Conflict Zones: War, Peace, and Reconciliation”
Monday, November 12th, 2007
Kick-off Speaker
Farooka Gauhari -An Afghan Woman Shares Her Story
Gemmell Multi-Purpose Room, 7:00 p.m -9:00 p.m
(Reception immediately following)
Join us in welcoming the
celebrated Farooka Gahari to Clarion University as the Keynote Speaker for
Equity Week. “Author of Searching for Saleem: An Afghan Woman’s Odyssey,
Farooka Gauhari recalls her life in war-torn Afghanistan during the Soviet
Union’s occupation of her homeland. Saleem, her husband, disappeared on April
27, 1978, during the Soviet-backed Communist takeover. Gauhari attempted to
find him as the world she knew was destroyed by constant warfare and power
plays. The roots of today’s terrorism and the beginning of the Taliban began
during the 1970s in Afghanistan, but Gauhari
recalls a different, beautiful country.”

Equity Week is an event that affirms the University's commitment to creating a sense of community. In 1994, former governor of Pennsylvania Robert P. Casey issued a proclamation that designated November 29 as Equity Day at Clarion University. In keeping with the spirit of the proclamation, Equity Week is celebrated annually during the month of November. The Office of Social Equity sponsors this event. The week's program culminates with an Equity Banquet that is sponsored by Student Senate.
