You are cordially invited to
join the One Book, One Community committee for a discussion of W. Somerset Maughan's classic novel The Razor’s Edge.
This novel is about a World War 1 veteran who travels the world from Tibet to Paris
in an attempt to find some meaning in his life. A classic in its own right, the
novel and film may bring forth questions about our own lives in contemporary America in the
midst of war. Following our brief discussion of the novel there will be a
showing of the 1984 version of the film adaptation starring Bill Murray.
The Razor’s Edge chronicles Larry Darrell as
he returns from the battlefields of World War I to America a different person. Upon
his return Larry heads off to Paris,
despite wedding plans with his fiancé, Isabel. There
he finds he prefers a simpler existence and begins to read. One book inspires
him to visit India and on to
Nepal
where he finds spiritual help from a lama. On returning to Paris he finds Isabel and some old friends,
but everyone, including Larry has changed.
