The Clarion University Police bicycle unit was
started in 1995. At that time, two officers received training and
began operation riding Trek bicycles. Since that time, three additional
officers have received the advanced training and have been added to the
unit. Officers now ride Gary Fisher bicycles with various modifications
made for police use. All bicycle officers wear specialized uniforms
but otherwise operate in the same capacities as the regular police officers,
including traffic stops and criminal arrests. Because of their mobility,
bicycle patrol units are especially useful for quick responses during special
events on campus that involve large crowds. Clarion University
bicycle officers have hosted and assisted in training programs for a number
of municipal police departments in the local area.
