Frequently Asked Questions

Clarion University has a successful recycling program that is in operation throughout the campus.  Over the last two years the University has recycled over 600 tons of paper, cardboard, plastic, and aluminum cans.  Additionally the University recycles the following list of items:

  • Motor oil
  • grease
  • anti-freeze
  • automobile and truck batteries
  • scrap metals
  • fluorescent light bulbs
  • Freon (refrigerant)
  • paints
  • computer monitors
  • computer printers
  • computer keyboards
  • computer CPU’s
  • used furniture and equipment

Clarion University invites and encourages the entire campus community to participate in our recycling program.  Faculty, staff and students are all an integral part of our program.  The custodial staff assists in the day-to-day collection of the recycling materials. They are responsible for emptying the recycling containers in every building on campus and placing the bagged glass, plastic, food cans, and aluminum material in a holding cart for commingled recyclables or a dumpster for paper and cardboard.  These containers are located outside and are emptied by our refuse vendor and taken to their recycling center.

Why Recycle?

Our continued efforts make it possible for the following examples:

Every ton of paper we recycle:

- Saves approximately 17 trees
- Saves enough energy to power a home for 6 months
- Keeps almost 60 pounds of effluent out of the air
- Saves 7,000 gallons of water
- Avoids 3 cubic yards of landfill

Where can I recycle?

Each academic building and residence hall on campus has trash cans placed in the hallways for paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and aluminum cans.  These receptacles are clearly marked to identify which items should go in which container.  Outside near most of our buildings are two different types of receptacles for recycling, which are available for use seven days a week.  Large brown dumpsters are provided for paper and cardboard and smaller brown carts are provided for plastic, glass and cans.  Both types of receptacles have stenciled in white what may be deposited in them.  During the last year we entered into a contract with our refuse vendor that now allows us to co-mingle our recyclables which makes it easier and lessens contamination.   However we must still separate the paper and cardboard from the glass, plastic, and cans.  Please be sure to use the appropriate receptacle.

 * *A NOTE ABOUT CONTAMINATION**

Contamination continues to be a serious problem with our recyclable materials! If food waste and other non-recyclable materials are placed in the recycle containers, the custodians must empty it as garbage. This reduces the amount of material we can recycle and defeats the purpose of the program.  Every recycle container has a material identification label. Please be mindful and do not throw garbage in the recycling containers.

Office/Academic Office Building Recycling

The Office and Academic Building Recycling Program is provided for all academic buildings on the Clarion University campus.

The University has placed containers on each of the floors in these areas. The materials collected are: glass, plastic, aluminum cans in one container and mixed office paper in another container.  Both containers have glossy stickers to identify which items go into which containers.

Small, blue desk side containers are supplied to each faculty and staff member for mixed office paper collection. Get in the habit of slipping all clean, dry paper into it. You’ll be surprised at how quickly it adds up.

Slightly larger containers are also available for placement near a copier machine, where a high volume of paper recycling may be realized.

**Special Note: **    If your building or office is relocating, please consider cleaning out your files and old records PRIOR to your move. With notification, the Facilities Management Department can work with you to provide additional collection containers in your area to accept a "temporarily" larger situation. To arrange a special pick-up or to request a special container, please call the Work Order Center at #2361.

Recycling in the Residence Halls

This is your home away from home, at least for now. Chances are you have already been participating in a recycling program of some kind in your hometown. So why not keep the spirit going by participating in the Clarion Recycling Program?

It’s easy! All students have the opportunity of taking their recyclable materials to the central collection area on each residence hall floor. There you will find containers for aluminum cans, paper, plastic, cardboard and glass.  Again, please be reminded that these containers must not be contaminated or we will have to dispose of the entire container as regular trash.

Frequently asked Questions

1. Q.  Do I need to remove staples and paper clips from my office paper when I recycle it?

A.  Although it would be more convenient for the sorting process, removing staples and paper clips is not necessary.

2. Q.  Can I recycle aluminum foil?

A.  Because most aluminum foil comes into contact with food which causes the recyclable to become contaminated, it is best not to recycle it.

3. Q.  Do I need to remove lids and caps from my beverage container when I recycle it?

A.  It is not necessary to remove your lids and caps.  The sorting process at the recycling plant will separate them into their appropriate recyclable class.

4. Q.  After I place my recyclables into the recycling bin where do they go?

A.  Recyclable materials that are collected in bins are picked up by Tri-County Industries, who is the current recycling vendor for the University.  The recyclables are then taken to a separation center.  After the recyclables are sorted and bailed they are then shipped to various recycling brokers across the country.

5. Q.  Can I recycle cardboard at the university?

A.  Yes, for small amounts of cardboard containers are provided in the hallways.  For larger amounts of cardboard there are large dumpsters outside of most of the campus buildings that take both paper and cardboard.

6. Q.  What plastics can be recycled at the university?

A.  When recycling plastics always check the recycling number usually located on the bottom of the containers to determine what type of plastic it is. The university currently only recycles #1 PETE type and #2 HDPE type of plastics.

 7. Q. Who should I call if I have a question regarding our recycling program?

A.  You may ask your building Facilities Coordinator or call the Facilities Management Department at #2362.

In addition to the above mentioned items the University makes a concerted effort to recycle as much as possible whenever an area is renovated or new furnishings are acquired.  Those items that can be used on campus are salvaged and other useful items are offered to non- profit organizations such as local schools.

Thank you for your participation in the Clarion University Recycling Program and your continued efforts to improve the environment.

If you have any questions, please call the Facilities Management Department at 393-2362.
