Clarion University Construction Update -- 4/4/08

Campbell Hall Demolition and South Campus Parking Lot

Scrap steel continued to be removed this past week and will continue next week.  Demolition of Campbell Hall concrete foundations began this past week and will continue until removed.  Backfilling of the building cavity with the crushed brick and block building block follows the foundation removal and will provide a support for the South Campus Parking Lot.

Pedestrian/Vehicular traffic and safety:  Demolition by nature can be hazardous despite efforts to contain debris.  Please use extra caution and do not walk or drive near demolition sites.

Dining Hall

Roofing is complete on the north side of the Dining Hall and will begin on other sides of the building as weather conditions permit.  Brickwork is being installed over the concrete blocks.   Plans for the Starbucks to be located in the building are being reviewed. Exterior finishes and roofing have been chosen, except for glass which will be LEED (energy efficiency standard) compliant.  We will soon begin planning for the demolition of Chandler Dining Hall and the relocation of utility lines to facilitate the next phase of on-campus student residences.

Pedestrian/Vehicular traffic and safety:  The road between Carrier and the new dining hall may be closed and the front entrance of Carrier locked intermittently while the roof is installed in order to preclude pedestrian hazards from falling debris.  A trench for electrical lines will be dug across lot H and the walkway from parking lot 6 and lot H to Carrier may be obstructed in early April.  Those parking in Lot H and Lot 6 should use the steps east of Lot H.

Science-Technology Building

Placing the concrete floor sections continued and the last concrete roof section has been placed.  Installation of the exterior steel curtain wall support, piping, HVAC ductwork, and electrical conduits continued.   Major pieces of equipment are on-site and will be set as the supports are completed.  Installation of the concrete steam trough, which connects the existing steam tunnel, began this past week.

Pedestrian/Vehicular traffic and safety:  Trenching is being dug in the area of the Science-Technology construction site in the future to allow workers to connect electric, sewer, water and communications lines to the site.  Please use extra care around excavation and normal pedestrian traffic paths near this site.

On-Campus Residences

Framing and sheeting continued on both buildings this past week.  Preparations are underway to connect the buildings to the campus electrical system and expected to complete this summer.  The contractor continues to work added hours and personnel as needed to make up any weather related lost time.

Other Pedestrian/Vehicular traffic and safety issues:  Orientation will be using Lot H and Lot 6 for parking on Fridays throughout the spring and summer.  Employees currently parking in Lot H should park in Lot 5 on Fridays.  Overall parking in Lots 5 and 6 will be limited on Fridays.
