Construction Update - March 10, 2008

Director of Facilities Planning

Please join me in welcoming Mr. James Stockman as the University’s new Director of Facilities Planning joining our staff on March 24th.  Mr. Stockman has been Facility Manager of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Butler, Pennsylvania since 2004.  He has also served as Director of the Engineering and Maintenance at UPMC Passavant Hospital and in numerous engineering positions with the Veterans Administration.  He is a graduate of West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Join me as well in thanking Mr. Dave Fagan and Mr. Joe Brinkley for their fine work during the vacancy in this critical position.  We should also thank the search committee for the position, chaired by Debbie Sobina and members Miguel Olivas-Lujan, Dave Tomeo, Mike McConnell, and Danielle McCauley for bringing an outstanding group of candidates for the position to campus.

Campbell Hall Demolition and South Campus Parking Lot

The demolition of Campbell Hall has begun in earnest.  All hazardous waste was removed from the building before this phase started, and as noted previously, this took a bit longer than expected.  The decision was made to use traditional crane and wrecking ball demolition in order to minimize the risk of any noise or debris affecting the surrounding neighborhood.  Design and other plans for the parking lot which will replace Campbell are nearly complete and will be provided to the University Council of Trustees and the State System Board of Governors in the near future.

Dining Hall

The construction crew has finished off the steel roof trusses.  As they lay the blocks and bricks around the exterior, they have had to move the scaffolding outside the original construction fence.  For the next few months in order to accommodate expanded scaffolding, the road between Carrier and the new dining hall will be restricted to one lane.  Entry to lot 5, lot 6 and lot H should be made from Wood Street.

Science-Technology Building

Contractors at the Science-Technology Building site are finishing up steel work and floors for the upper stories of the building and expect to be starting their exterior work including installation of the roof and wall preparation work in the near future.  Much of the drain installation and electrical work is already complete.

On-Campus Residences

Foundation has been completed and first and second floor work has begun.  The two towers that you see which distinguish each of the building are the stairwell and elevator shafts for the buildings and should show the projected maximum height of the living area for each building.

Spring is almost here, and with it . . .

While the ongoing construction is a nuisance and an inconvenience, with a little work it will make our campus look much better in a relatively short period of time.  When the snow melts in the spring, it invariably uncovers unsightly litter, but with a little work we can quickly make that situation better too.

Clarion and Venango campuses are the home for many of our students and a home away from home for many who work here.  Please don’t throw litter on the ground and don’t let your friends do it either.  If you see litter on the ground, please take a minute to pick it up and throw it in the receptacles.  If you’re already pitching it in the trash, many thanks from all of us.
