The Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) is committed to helping undergraduate and graduate students with all aspects of their career development.  Our mission is to inform and empower students and alumni by linking them with resources and opportunities, so they can develop and achieve their career goals.
We collaborate with academic departments to provide a learning environment where students can acquire the knowledge, skills, and experiences required to successfully transition to employment or graduate education.
We have designed our services to assist both virtual and on-campus students at any stage of their career development with the following:

  • Researching careers related to majors
  • Gaining experience
  • Preparing for the internship and job search process
  • Attending career/job fairs and networking events
  • Finding part-time, seasonal and full-time employment
  • Preparing graduate and pre-professional school applications
  • Transitioning from student to professional

Ethical and Legal Standards in Student Hiring - Campus Recruiting and Resume Referral Services
Clarion University is a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the leading source of information on the employment of the college educated and an organization to which a great number of academic and hiring organizations belong.  NACE provides a set of ethical standards for guiding the job-search process. Helping students in their job searches can result in unanticipated illegal or unethical actions.  If employment activities are conducted through student organizations or academic departments, they shall be in accordance with CCPD policies and NACE standards. Titled Principles for Professional Practice for Career Services & Employment Professionals, these standards are based on notions of fairness, equal opportunity, truthfulness, non-injury, confidentiality, and lawfulness.

Career-Related Class Assignments
We have many services and resources which can be used to complement your curriculum and support class assignments. Please contact us at least three weeks prior to making a career-related class assignment that involves the center to ensure that we are prepared to accommodate your students and able to meet the objectives of your assignment.  Class attendance at career events and job fairs is also welcome with three weeks notice to ensure the event is appropriate for meeting your learning outcomes.  Please check the respective event web page for pre-registration information, if applicable.

Class Presentations
We welcome the opportunity to visit your classes and offer presentations on career research, job search preparation, the job search process or customized programs. Please read the Guidelines for Program Requests and Academic Collaborations then complete an online Program Request Form to schedule a presentation. We would appreciate at least three weeks advance notice of your preferred presentation date so we have time to select a presenter and make arrangements for the program.

Academic Connection Series
The Career Development Center (CDC) Academic Career Connection Series is designed to:

  • Inform, partner and develop effective collaborations with Clarion University faculty who support career development as a part of their curriculum or through academic advising.
  • Enhance RCM employment strength efforts.

Please contact us for more information.

Class Presentations by Employers and Alumni Mentors
Many employers and Clarion alumni who recruit at Clarion are willing to give class presentations on topics that relate to your curriculum. Contact the CCPD, at 393-2323 or email dbrush@pennwest.edu if you are interested in having an employer or alumni recruiter speak to your classes.  Also, please let us know if you are bringing someone to campus to speak with your class or an RSO that you advise.

Online Career Resources
Explore the CCPD website to access online resources including narrated PowerPoint presentations, videos, podcasts, publications, and more!

Handouts
Some faculty like to use CCPD handouts as part of their courses. While we are willing to share our materials, we are not in a position to provide large quantities. Please encourage students to access our handouts online, or contact us for a master copy for reproduction through your department.

Mock Interview Program
Basic (general questions) and Customized (career/position specific) mock interviews are offered by the Career Development Center so that students can practice their interviewing skills before an actual interview. Please speak to us in advance if you would like to designate mock interviews as a course requirement.  Another option is to invite a CDC staff member to your class to present a program on interviewing to your students, provide information about the Mock Interview Program, and encourage students to schedule a practice interview with us. We can customize our effective interviewing presentation to include group mock interviews with peers or a panel of professionals. Please contact us to discuss these options.

Career Research
We offer online, individual and group presentations that can help students research and explore careers that relate to their interests and majors.

Career Resources
We maintains hard copy and on-line resources on occupational, job search, employer, and graduate school information. Students may access the materials during office hours for class assignments or personal research.

CUmentor
The CUmentor program is designed to link alumni and employer partners with current Clarion University students to facilitate mentor-mentee partnerships that foster the sharing of knowledge and experience.

Internships
The CCPS provides individual assistance and an online web page to guide students who are interested in finding an internship. Before making any internship plans, they are instructed to contact their academic department's internship coordinator to discuss internship opportunities, program requirements, and application procedures.

The JoAnne Day Student of the Year Awards are presented by PennACE each year to recognize outstanding co-ops and interns enrolled at member institutions. Three awards of $500 each are given each year, one in a technical field, one in non-profit (includes government), and one in business.

Writing Reference Letters
Another role that faculty play in the hiring process is writing recommendation letters or serve as references. Guidelines have been developed by the National Association of Colleges and Employers to assist you in this area.
