Getting Started:

There are several ways to generate ideas. The following are some valuable strategies:

Gather Info

•  Read sources
•  Take notes
•  Write down responses to strong facts or opinions

Cluster (mindmaps)

•  Center your topic
•  Branch main ideas off from topic
•  Branch supporting ideas from main ideas

Brainstorm

•  Set 5 or 10 minute time limit
•  List any and all thoughts or ideas

The Journalistic Approach

Ask: Who? What? When? Where? Why?

Freewriting

•  Choose a broad topic
•  Designate a time limit
•  Begin to write – don't think or stop – just write
•  Highlight common ideas and repeat
