Writing Center Facts

The Staff:

The staff is comprised of a director, Dr. Welsch, 16 writing consultants – 6 graduate students and 10 undergraduates

Writing Consultants on staff represent a variety of disciplinary backgrounds as illustrated by their majors and minors.

Writing Center Consultants meet weekly to discuss professional literature on writing center practice, develop strategies for one-on-one consultants and maintain a journal that logs their development as a consultant.

Writing Consultants work on a variety of projects throughout the semester including:

• Bi-annual publication of “The Write Connection,” a newsletter about The Writing Center, the English Department, and writing issues.
• Development of current handouts, some are posted on the web (see Resources for Writers)
• Contributions to the website
• Maintenance of center statistics

Peer Critiques:

Besides using the computers in the writing center, some English professors use peer critique groups with a writing consultant as a facilitator. Consultants work on average with groups of 4-5 students.
