Nursing Honor Society Holds Annual Induction Ceremony
The Mu Xi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of
Nursing, held its seventeenth annual induction ceremony on Friday, May 11,
2007, at the Arlington Hotel.
The keynote speaker for the evening was Dr. Kathleen Patterson,
who discussed “Leading Where You Are.” Dr. Patterson will assume her post as
Director of the School of Nursing and Allied Health at Clarion
University–Venango Campus on June 1. She earned her bachelor’s degree in
nursing from Villanova University, her master’s degree in nursing from the
University of Pennsylvania, her and Ph. D. in nursing from the University of
Pittsburgh.
An induction ceremony was held to recognize five registered
nurses who are pursuing bachelor of science in nursing degrees at Clarion
for scholarly achievement, leadership qualities, and creative commitment to
the nursing profession. They are Alicia Bair, Robin Bilan, Leah Chmielewski,
Charlotte Vermeulin, and Amy Winger.
Research awards were presented to master of science in nursing
(MSN) students Mary Terwilliger, for her research of postpartum depression
in northwestern Pennsylvania, and Christine Highley and Melissa Greene, for
their joint research project, in conjunction with Northwest Pennsylvania
Area Health Education Center, on access and barriers to care for vulnerable
populations.
The Mary Kay Hartle Scholarhip was awarded to MSN student Amy
Kline, who is working to become a nurse educator and was elected vice
president of the organization.
Michele Godin, a bachelor of nursing student, was the recipient
of a scholarship made possible through a contribution by Dr. Patterson.
The mission of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau
International, is to support the learning, knowledge and professional
development of nurses committed to making a difference in health worldwide.
