COMMUNITY HISTORY DAYS TO FEATURE GEOCACHING
Geocaching will be a feature of the upcoming Barbara Morgan Harvey
Community History Days on Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10, at Clarion
University–Venango Campus.
Geocaching is a game in which participants seek hidden "geocaches" or
"caches" that usually consist of a trinket and a logbook within a watertight
container. Caches are located using a hand-held Global Positioning System
(GPS) device. This outdoor sport has become extremely popular all over the
world.
About 11 temporary geocaches will be placed in and around Oil City for
the two-day Community History Days event. These geocaches will be
strategically located in spots that represent some historic significance to
the community.
While these geocaches will not be "official" caches, which are eligible
for credit on www.geocaching.com, they will be typical geocache containers
with the standard log book and trinkets. Prizes for the finders will consist
of items that promote Oil City and its surrounding communities. Some items
will be informative and others will be valuable keepsakes. For these
temporary caches, participants will not be required to leave a trinket in
exchange, as is the standard practice in geocaching. Rather, they may keep
what they find as a reward for participating in the event.
GPS coordinates will be provided to all participants throughout each day
at the event information table located at the Robert W. Rhoades Center at
Clarion University–Venango Campus.
In addition to the temporary geocaches, information will be available for
any cachers who wish to seek over a dozen official www.geocaching.com caches
located throughout Oil City. This event will provide a great opportunity for
fellow geocachers to converge, mingle, and learn about Oil City’s history.
