Community Forum to Address School Violence
to be Held at Clarion University–Venango
Campus
The Diversity Working Group of
Clarion University–Venango Campus and the Student-Pennsylvania Education
Association (S-PSEA) will sponsor a community forum entitled “The Bully
Crisis: Prevention and Resources” on Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at 7:00
p.m. in the campus’ Robert W. Rhoades Center auditorium. The program is
free-of-charge and is open to the public.
Facilitated by Susan Franke, a
Pittsburgh-based leader in the field of school issues, the presentation
will assist parents and community members in becoming more aware of the
growing problem of school violence in Pennsylvania and across the
country.
The forum will provide
information that will promote better understanding of bullies and their
victims, the causes of bullying, conflict resolution techniques to
assist children to think before acting out in violence, and the
characteristics of our culture that provide the foundation for violence.
Discussion will include bully prevention programs that have a proven
track record and what parents, school staff, communities and students
can do to make schools safe for all children, regardless of race,
religion, sexual orientation, abilities, gender, or any other factor
that may cause a student to become a target of bullying.
Susan Franke has over 20 years
of experience in health care and community services and has given over
650 presentations to schools and community groups since 1998. Her
children's programs received an award of excellence from the Pittsburgh
Public School District. Susan was recently featured in the
Murrysville Star and the Green Tree Times. She was also a
guest on the KDKA Morning Show with Jon Burnett, where she
discussed her “Teddy Bear Therapy”, disability awareness, bully
prevention and Hug Therapy programs.
Ms. Franke is a registered nurse
who has worked as a public health nurse, staff nurse and supervisor. She
is also a licensed PA nursing home administrator. She received a
bachelor of nursing degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of
Nursing and a master’s degree in health education from Penn State
University. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist.
