First Certificate Student
Graduates from Clarion University-Venango Campus
OIL CITY, PA – Cheryl Perkins, a returning adult
student from Tionesta, is the first individual to graduate from Clarion
University–Venango Campus’ one-year certificate programs. Perkins achieved a 4.0
grade point average and received her certificate in Applied Computer Systems in
June 2003.
“The program was tougher than I
thought it would be, but it was well worth the time and effort,” said Perkins.
“The instructors were always available to answer questions and they made
learning enjoyable.”
Perkins has an associate degree in
secretarial services. She was laid off in 2002 and realized that landing a
better position would require computer skills that she lacked. With the full
support of her husband, Clark, she enrolled at Venango Campus to hone her skills
and expand her career options. She now understands the ins and outs of word
processing, database, spreadsheet and graphics software packages and feels
better equipped to meet work demands.
“I had little experience using
computers prior to enrolling in this program,” said Perkins. “Now I have a lot
more to offer a potential employer.”
Clarion University–Venango Campus offers one-year
certificate programs to enhance employability in a variety of high-demand fields
including applied computer systems, business accounting, criminal investigation,
electronics technology (in collaboration with the Venango Technology Center),
executive office management, medical office management, legal office management,
massage therapy, and small business management. The programs are sponsored by
the campus’ Office of Continuing Education and include a combination of credit
and non-credit classes.
“Many individuals were looking for a
way to boost their career advancement potential in a short period of time,” said
Christopher M. Reber, executive dean of Venango Campus. “We developed these
certificate programs in response to that need, and I’m pleased to say that
enrollment is growing. I’m also delighted to offer my congratulations to Cheryl
Perkins on a job well done.”
A key aspect of the certificate programs,
according to Hope Lineman, coordinator of the campus’ Office of Continuing
Education, is that they fall under the Workforce Investment Board’s demand list
which allows displaced workers to apply for financial support for the program.
“In addition to the established certificate programs, the Office of Continuing
Education also customizes training to meet the needs of individuals and
businesses,” said Lineman.
Clarion University–Venango Campus provides
high-quality educational programs and personalized services to help students
succeed. Students can earn an associate degree, a bachelor’s or master’s degree
in select areas, obtain a one-year certificate or participate in a variety of
professional development and personal enrichment courses. Clarion
University–Venango Campus is committed to serving the needs of the community.
Special programs offered at the campus include Kids in College, Jump Start and
SeniorLink.
