Student Leader Empowerment Program

SLEP continues live and online in fall 2014!

Clarion University's Student Leader Empowerment Program (SLEP) is expanding to offer a more well-rounded training for current and potential campus leaders. After fully developing the content of our student leader training program, we are offering the full program to students in person and online. The leadership series will be offered both in the Gemmell Student Complex and as an online program in D2L!

SLEP is a series of workshops offered every semester to enhance students' basic leadership skills. There are seven SLEP workshops: ethical decision making, diversity awareness, group dynamics, conflict resolution, effective meeting management, planning and goal setting, and budget management. Each workshop is approximately one hour, with a short assessment at the end of each meeting. Students who maintain an average of 80% on the assessments and attend at least six of the seven sessions will receive student leader certification.

The online version is in a different format, and students enrolled at Clarion University can participate in the program through D2L. Each online session will be released on the date of its live workshop version, and will be available for the entire week until the next live workshop is offered. In order to register for either of these programs, send and email to mwleadership@clarion.edu, with your name and CU email address, and indicate which format of the program you prefer to take.

SLEP is a great series for students who are interested in getting more involved on campus through Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs), campus jobs, and other leadership opportunities. The series is an excellent program for members and newly elected officers of RSOs to attend if they have not done so already. Student leadership skills are learned and reinforced in ways that can help their organizations grow and become more productive.

Students do not have to attend all of the sessions to participate in SLEP. If there is a topic that is of specific interest to a student, he or she is encouraged to come for the evening and be a part of that particular workshop. Certification will only be granted, however, to students who meet the full requirements.

The next SLEP series will start in October of the fall 2014 semester. The series will be offered on Wednesdays at 7pm, in 248 Gemmell. The dates for the workshops are:

October 1: Rogers Laugand – Diversity Awareness

October 8: Diana Brush – Running Effective Meetings

October 15: Shawn Hoke – Values and Decision-making

October 22: Kelly Ryan – Working with Groups and Teams

October 29: Jimmy McGee – Planning and Goal Setting

November5: Matt Shaffer – Conflict Management

November 12: Shelly Wilson – Budgeting and Finances

Students who successfully complete the program will receive certificates at the Reinhard Awards Ceremony in the spring. To register for SLEP, click here and submit your name, email address, and phone number in the email window. You will receive a confirmation email in return.
