One-Year Certificate Programs

Venango Campus offers an array of certificate programs to enhance employability in a variety of high-demand fields or expand advancement potential in a current job. Certificate programs include both credit and non-credit classes. Certificate programs are a good choice for students who are unsure if they want to commit to a degree program, who want to gain skills in just one year to secure employment, or need additional training or skills to advance in their current employment. By taking a combination of classes, you are able to gain confidence and excellent job skills, and ultimately a rewarding career. The courses provide hands-on training and live classroom time as well as online instruction with qualified instructors. Students can begin most of these programs in either January or August, unless otherwise noted.

NEW Advanced Medical Technician provides you with the training necessary to become a multi-skilled practitioner. You will learn a variety of skills needed to work in the medical setting plus the added benefit of phlebotomy training, which is highly desired by the broad spectrum of medical facilities in this region. This program includes courses in accounting, computer applications, communications, and medical studies, including coding, to equip you with skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in the medical environment.

NEW Executive Bookkeeping Assistant provides training in general ledger management. You will learn skills in accounts payable and receivable, correct accounting balancing and reconciliation procedures, tax return preparation, and depreciation.

NEW Legal Office Supervisor prepares you to work in the legal environment, which can include a law firm, a non-profit agency or local, county, and state government agencies that employ staff with expertise in this field. Course content establishes a foundation of solid legal concepts along with in-depth knowledge on related subjects that make the legal administrator one of the most integral members in the organization. Employers who wish to train existing personnel in this field will find the flexible schedule of this program ideal. It addresses those areas which current employees may be lacking, thus making them an even more valuable asset upon successful completion of the program.

Massage Therapy prepares you for a rewarding career in the alternative health care system. Massage therapists work in conjunction with many different types of health care practitioners from physicians and chiropractors to health club fitness consultants and in wellness centers.
August 2009-August 2010                                          600+ hour program

Medical Coding provides you with the skills necessary to complete the medical coding process in any health care environment. The program is designed to prepare you to sit for national certification. Online courses are available through a partnership with the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), allowing you to complete the program from home.

NEW Medical Office Supervisor addresses the demands of medical facilities that need quality office personnel to handle the varied responsibilities demanded by this unique employer base. You are likely to be employed throughout the health care system in positions that require supervisory and leadership skill sets. You will gain knowledge in business from communications and bookkeeping, to fundamentals of management and medical coding.

Pharmacy Technician prepares you to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies, and other health care settings, working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement. This 50-hour program is offered in the fall only.

Phlebotomy Technician provides you with the training you need to become a vital member of the clinical laboratory team, whose main function is to obtain a patient's blood specimen by venipuncture and microcollection. Phlebotomists work under the supervision of medical technologists or laboratory managers. Phlebotomists are employed throughout the health care system, in hospitals, neighborhood health centers, medical group practices, HMOs, public health facilities, veterans hospitals, insurance carriers, and in various other settings. This 210-hour program is offered in the spring only.

NEW
Production Supervisor is a new and innovative program that will prepare you to market yourself to employers who are seeking qualified candidates to fill entry level supervisory openings. Course content is unique in that it includes continuing education, college credits and half-day seminars taught by seasoned professionals with expertise in manufacturing, targeted critical areas of hiring, staff evaluation, and employee motivation and conflict management. The training provides instruction for a broad array of management, supervisors, crew leaders and/or foremen-oriented positions.

Program Evaluation for Public and Non-Profit Agencies prepares you for employment or provides those currently working for non-profit agencies with an understanding of the following processes for optimal operation and function:  surveys, focus groups, Excel & Access, basics of program evaluation, outcome/impact assessment, working with stakeholders, cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analyses, and standards and ethics. The program is offered collaboratively with Keystone Community Education Council, Focus on Our Future Collaborative Board, and Venango Campus Continuing Education.

Criteria for Admission for all Continuing Education Certificate Programs:

  • High school diploma or successful completion of the G.E.D. exam.
  • High school seniors may apply.
  • Act 33 & 34 (child abuse and criminal background clearances for Massage Therapy, Advanced Medical Technologist, and Phlebotomy Technician certificate programs.

*Students must achieve a grade of C or better in all courses and must maintain a 90 percent attendance rate in order to earn a certificate of completion.
