VISION CLARION- WHERE TRADITION MEETS THE FUTURE MISSION THE MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LIBRARY SCIENCE OF CLARION UNIVERSITY IS TO EDUCATE INDIVIDUALS FOR CAREERS IN A DIVERSE INFORMATION SOCIETY. GOALS I. Education -Teach students the major theories, principles, and current and emerging practices in the field II. Leadership and Service- Instill in students the qualities, knowledge, skills, and passion inherent in effective leaders and modeled by the faculty through their research and service III. Research - Teach students to understand, design, conduct, and disseminate research in the library professions and related disciplines
IV. Professional Development - Provide Opportunities for lifelong learning
OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES
To meet each of the four goals, the following student competencies have been developed. These competencies are intended to serve as a guide to faculty, students, and employers regarding the knowledge, skills and attitudes which the department expects of all of its M.S.L.S. graduates.
Each student will necessarily develop additional capabilities in their chosen specialization. Infused in these competencies is the department's conviction, as reflected in its curriculum, that the nature and role of information in society, the appropriate use of technology in the provision of library services, and the profession's commitment to intellectual freedom are fundamental to librarianship.
Clarion graduates will:

Provide direct public service to diverse populations using a variety of resources

Demonstrate their knowledge of the history, ethics and values of librarianship

Understand and apply the theory and practice of organizing information in libraries and information centers

Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the quantitative and qualitative methods of problem solving, decision making, planning and methods of research
