Clarion University management and human resources senior Alex Demczak of Burgettstown was elected to the national board of The Society for Advancement of Management during the Undergraduate Research Project Conference April 3-6 in Orlando. Demczak, a member of Clarion’s SAM chapter, will serve during the 2014-2015 school year.
Four additional members of the Clarion SAM chapter also attended the conference: junior Mallory Mohnkern of Oil City, senior Shaina Vasquez of Belle Vernon and junior Eric Blose of Dubois, all management and human resources majors; and Matthew Ehrgott of Erie, a junior accounting major. SAM advisor Dr. Chad Smith, associate professor of management and marketing, accompanied them.
The students attended various workshops and competed in a 15-minute “student management case” competition featuring a JCPenney business plan. Clarion’s team presented its in-depth research analysis on providing a strategic plan to increase JCPenney’s sales. Although Clarion did not place in the competition, the experience was valuable to all.
“We will be able to take this incredible experience and incorporate the knowledge into many of our courses we still have to take. We will also use this knowledge to win this competition at next year’s conference!” Smith said.
Clarion University is the high-achieving, nationally recognized, comprehensive university that delivers a personal and challenging academic experience.
