For the third time in the last four years, the Clarion University women's volleyball team is going dancing. The Golden Eagles (26-9) received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament Sunday night and will be the third seed in the eight-team Atlantic Region.

About 60 fans of Clarion University's basketball team planned to board a bus at around 7 this morning and take a seven-hour ride from the Pittsburgh area to Lexington. They want to see their beloved Golden Eagles play at mighty Kentucky on Friday night and, perhaps more importantly, see a favorite son, Kentucky Coach John Calipari.

Electrical utility open house at Clarion University - Venango Campus
Clarion University-Venango Campus will host an open house for students interested in the Electric Utility Technology concentration of the Associate of Applied Science in Industrial Technology Degree, which is offered through a partnership between FirstEnergy Corporation, the parent company of Penelec, and Clarion University. The open house will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., in the Robert W. Rhoades Center at the campus. The program is free and open to all interested persons. Tours of the campus will be available following the program. Students do not need to pre-register.

"Evening Peace" premiere to open scholarship campaign

Wrestling officiating classes offered
Clarion University and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) will be conducting Wrestling Officiating Classes each Tuesday, Oct. 20 and 27, and Nov. 3 in Tippin Gymnasium room 205 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The classes are free to any Clarion University student with a valid I.D. Others interested in attending must pay a $30 fee.

State budget impasse hampers SBDC efforts
The continuing Pennsylvania budget impasse is not helping small business in Pennsylvania according to Dr. Woodrow Yeaney, director of the Clarion University Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Among the items being held up in the budget battle is funding for SBDCs, a statewide support system for new and existing businesses.

Center for Legal Education's certification renewed
The Center for Legal Education at Clarion University has received a two-year extension of its certification as an Accredited Provider from Pennsylvania's Continuing Education Legal Education Board. Irish black comedy "Skin Deep" opens Clarion theatre season
"Skin Deep" by Paul Meade will make its university premier as the first play of Clarion University Theatre's 2009-10 season. This is only the fourth staging of this play since its development in 2003.

Clarion University–Venango Campus professor attends National Security Forum
Dr. Ellen Foster, Assistant Professor of English at Clarion University–Venango Campus, was one of approximately 130 civilian leaders in business, education, and government from across the country to be invited by the Secretary of the Air Force to attend the 56th Annual National Security Forum at the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. Held this year during the week of May 18-22, the forum is designed to expose influential citizens to senior U.S. and international officers and civilian equivalents in order to engage in an open and candid exchange of ideas about the Air Force and national and international security issues.

"Psycho Beach Party" bringing fun to Clarion University stage
Fun in the theatre is the goal when Clarion University Theatre closes is 2008-09 season with performances of the gender-bending camp comedy, “Psycho Beach Party,” a spoof of 1960’s beach party/Gidget surfing movies mixed with Hitchcock thrillers, psychological pot-boilers with a healthy dose of “Mommie, Dearest” thrown in for good measure. Performances are scheduled April 15-18 at 8 p.m. and April 16 at 2 p.m. in Marwick-Boyd Little Theatre.

Smoking cessation class at Clarion University - Venango Campus
Family Service & Children’s Aid Society Tobacco Prevention Program will collaborate with Clarion University–Venango Campus to provide a free smoking cessation class to students, staff and the community. To provide support for those who have a goal to quit smoking in 2009, the American Lung Association’s “Freedom from Smoking” cessation program will be offered on Mondays at 2 p.m., beginning March 23 in the Robert W. Rhoades Center at the campus. The cessation class is eight sessions over the course of seven weeks. Each participant will receive a free workbook and possible Nicotine Replacement Therapy.

Educational opportunities for Western Pennsylvania students expanded with the signing of an agreement between Clarion University and Butler County Community College (BC3). The agreement allows transfer of all credits earned in a two-year BC3 degree to be transferred to Clarion University toward the completion of a four-year degree.

Monsignor Olowin appointed campus minister
Msgr. Jan C. Olowin has been appointed by Bishop Donald Trautman of the Erie Roman Catholic Diocese to a six-year term as Campus Minister at Clarion University and pastor of St. Michael Parish in Emlenton PA. Msgr. Olowin replaces Fr. James G. Faluszczak, who served as the university’s campus minister from 2001 until last August, when he was named to a six-year term as Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua in Sheffield PA, and Chaplain to Warren State Hospital.

Clarion University professors Dr. Joanne Washington and Dr. Andrew Lingwall will conduct a national panel discussion on the ethics of diversity in public relations at the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania on September 26 in Pittsburgh. National Hardwood Lumber Association to hold graduation in Oil City
The National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA), headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, held a graduation ceremony at the Venango Technology Center in Oil City on Friday, August 8, 2008. The ceremony honored the 156th graduating class of the association’s Inspector Training School and the first class to complete the program offsite in the school’s sixty-year history.
