Connecting a personally-owned Windows XP laptop to the wireless network

NOTE:  Your wireless card must be configured for a DHCP assigned IP address for your computer to connect to the University's wireless networks.

For Windows XP Systems:

These instructions are written for Windows XP systems in which Windows controls your wireless network card. If you are using another Windows Operating System or your wireless card is managed by another company’s software these instructions should serve as a guide. These instructions will guide you through the necessary configuration settings to allow your laptop to connect to the "cu-wifi-secure" network on Clarion campus or the "ven-wifi-secure" network on the Venango campus. This network is designed for use by Clarion University staff, faculty, and students that are using their personal laptops to access the University’s wireless network.

Note: You should only have to perform the steps in this guide one time per laptop. You will likely need administrative rights to your computer to complete this configuration.

  • Open your “Network Connections” window. The “Network Connections” window can be accessed in a few different ways. You can right click on the “My Network Places” icon on the Desktop and choose “Properties” or you can navigate to the Control Panel through the “Start” menu and open the “Network Connections” window from there.
  • Network Connections” window is displayed, right click on your wireless card and choose "Properties"

The Wireless Card Properties window should now be displayed.

  • Click on the “Wireless Networks” Tab.
  • Click on the “Add…” button to add a new wireless network.

The Wireless Network Properties window should now be displayed.

  • Association” tab in the “Wireless network properties” window.
  • In the “Network name (SSID):” field type “cu-wifi-secure” (lower case and without the quotes) if you are on the Clarion Campus, but not in a residence hall.

       -- OR --
  • In the “Network name (SSID):” field type “ven-wifi-secure” (lower case and without the quotes) if you are on the Venango Campus

       -- OR --
  • In the "Network name (SSID):" field type "resnet-wifi-secure" (lower case and without the quotes) if you are in a residence hall
  • In the “Network Authentication:” field select “Open”.
  • In the “Data encryption:” field select “WEP”.
  • The “Network key:” field and the “Confirm network key:” field are to be empty.
  • Check the box in front of “The key is provided for me automatically

  • Click on the “Authentication” tab in the “Wireless network properties” window.
  • Check the box in front of “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network”.
  • In the “EAP type:” field select ‘Protected EAP (PEAP).
  • Uncheck the box in front of “Authenticate as computer when computer information is available
  • Uncheck the box in front of “Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable
  • Click on the “Properties” button under the “EAP type:” field.

The “Protected EAP Properties” window should now be displayed.

  • Uncheck the box in front of “Validate server certificate”.
  • In the “Select Authentication Method:” field select “Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)”.
  • Check the box in front of “Enable Fast Reconnect”.
  • Click on the “Configure…” button to the right of the “Select Authentication Method:” field.

The “EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties” window should now be displayed.

  • Uncheck the box in front of “Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)."

  • Click the “OK” button in the “EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties” window.
  • This should return you to the “Protected EAP Properties” window.
  • Click the “OK” button in the “Protected EAP Properties” window.
  • This should return you to the “Wireless network properties” window.
  • Click on the “Connection” tab in the “Wireless network properties” window.

If you want your computer to automatically connect to the “cu-wifi-secure”, "ven-wifi-secure" or "resnet-wifi-secure" wireless network when it is within range check the box in front of “Connect when this network is in range.”.

If you want to manually connect to the “cu-wifi-secure”, "ven-wifi-secure" or "resnet-wifi-secure" wireless network leave this box unchecked.

  • Click on the “OK” button in the “Wireless network properties” window.

This should return you to the wireless card properties window.

  • Click on the “Wireless Networks” tab.
  • Verify that "cu-wifi-secure" (Clarion campus), "ven-wifi-secure" (Venango campus) or "resnet-wifi-secure" (ResNet) is listed under “Preferred networks:”.
  • Click the “OK” button to close this window and activate the new settings.

This completes the configuration of your computer for the “cu-wifi-secure”, "ven-wifi-secure" or "resnet-wifi-secure" wireless network.  Your computer should now be ready to access the wireless network.

If you are within range of the wireless network the following message should appear indicating that your computer sees the “cu-wifi-secure”, "ven-wifi-secure" or "resnet-wifi-secure" wireless network.

Now you need to follow the Logon Process to connect to the wireless network.
