Books
To locate BOOKS about African-Americans in the University Libraries, go to the University Libraries' homepage, and then click on PILOT: Clarion's Online Catalog. Perform a subject keyword search and enter the following subject term:

Browsing For Books In The University Libraries
To BROWSE for books about African-Americans in the Carlson Library, search the shelves in the Reference section, within the E185 range of call numbers. Others can be found within the Z1361 range of call numbers, or in the qE185 call number range. If you are looking for media, you can browse on media shelve within the E185 range of call numbers. Children’s nonfiction books can be found within the j372.8 and j917.3 ranges of call numbers. In the Suhr Library on the Venango campus, search for books in the E185 range of call numbers. It is also possible to browse the collection online using a call number search in the catalog.
Journal Articles
To locate JOURNAL ARTICLES about African-Americans, go to the University Libraries’ homepage, click on A-Z Database List, and then click on the database you wish to search.
ProQuest Direct
After you enter Proquest you can search multiple database. Select all that apply and click the continue button.
In the text box, type in the word(s) or phrase(s) for which you want to search.
Enter: African Americans, Black Americans, or Blacks.
You can also enter more specific terms such as African American Literature.
To perform a subject search, click on Advanced Search, select subject as the field to search.
Enter the search term: Blacks, or Black History.
EBSCO
Select databases such as Academic Search Complete, Business Source Premier, or Health Source: Consumer Edition.
To perform a subject search, click on Subjects, and then enter search terms such as
African-Americans
Black Americans
Lexis-Nexis
Select any of the services listed (General or News Topics are good places to start), and enter the search term African Americans. If you are looking for biographical information, click People and select one of the biographical sources from the drop-down menu.
World Wide Web
To find WEB SITES with information about African-Americans, open an Internet browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, and choose a search engine such as Alta Vista or Yahoo. At the search screen, type in the topic you wish to research. When using the Internet for research, use the most specific search term possible. Because databases do not narrow search terms in the same manner, experiment with various search terms and phrases to produce the most relevant results.
